It is with great sadness that the family of Doreen Wakewich announces her peaceful passing at the age of 88 at Hogarth Riverview on Sunday Jan. 14, 2024, with family by her side. Doreen was a loving wife, mother, grandma, and great grandma. Doreen was born on Dec. 14, 1935, in Port Arthur, ON. On May 21, 1955, at the age of 19, Doreen married Ron Wakewich. They celebrated 68 years of marriage in 2023. When they got married Ron said, “I’ll earn the money and you look after it”, which she did very well.
Doreen was a stay at a home mom who spent countless hours driving their 4 children to dance and music lessons, hockey, football and baseball practices and games. Doreen was athletic and walked or biked or both every day for many years. She curled for 1 year at the Curladrome winning the club championship and retired undefeated. She was an avid cross-country skier and was proud to ski in her eighties as now the membership was free. Doreen loved fishing with Ron in their canoe in the Graham area, often out fishing him with many pickerel and large pike. A much loved and loving grandma, Doreen along with Ron never missed a grade school or high school graduation for her 9 grandchildren no matter where they lived. Her perogies and cinnamon buns were loved by everyone who had them!
Doreen is survived and will be missed by her husband Ron Wakewich, her four children, nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren with two more on the way. Daughter Debbie (Greg) Fayrik of Thunder Bay, granddaughter Brittany (Dave) Aldridge and great-grandchildren Brooks and Lily Aldridge of Calgary, granddaughter Kaitlin (Patrick) Kennedy of Toronto; Son Ron (Leana) Wakewich, granddaughter Kim Wakewich (Pat Miniaci), and grandson Kyle Wakewich of Thunder Bay; Son Bruce (Charlene) Wakewich of Sundridge, grandson Justin (Shaughnessy) Wakewich and great-grandson Calloway Wakewich of Collingwood, granddaughter Sarah (Ben) DeBruyne and great-grandson Lucas DeBruyne of Ottawa, granddaughter Stephanie (Mike) Schad and great-grandson Nathan Schad of Mt. Albert; Son Darrell (Stacey) Wakewich, granddaughter Abby Wakewich and grandson Caleb Wakewich of Brandon. Doreen is also survived by her sister Connie (Gary) Allen. She was predeceased by her parents George and Eva Heipel and her sisters Gloria Johnson and Darlene Maheux.
The family would like to thank the staff at Chartwell Isabella Place and Hogarth Riverview for their compassionate care during her stay there. Cremation has taken place and a private family service was held. A celebration of life will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the George Jeffrey Children’s Foundation, the MS Society of Canada, or the St. Joseph’s Foundation of Thunder Bay. Arrangements entrusted to the Blake Funeral Chapel, 200 May St. S, Thunder Bay, ON.
