Doreen Elizabeth Joy (Masson) passed away peacefully on Saturday December 14th with her daughter and grandson by her side.
Doreen was born in Winnipeg Manitoba in August 1942. Her father Harold Masson was enlisted with the RCAF and proudly served in WWII. Her mother Elizabeth (Betty) Masson was the only child of Irish immigrants. 18 months later her sister Ann was born. This started a life long friendship of all things you can imagine. Childhood shenanigans, marriages, children, heartbreak and travel. Doreen moved from her small farming community in southern Manitoba in her early 20’s to Calgary AB. She married Leonard Joy in 1968 and together they raised their family making many friends and memories along the way.
Doreen was a dedicated employee of Shoppers Drug Mart TD square in Calgary AB. She was employed there from 1979 to her retirement in 2009. This drug store was truly a second home to Doreen where she made many friends and lasting memories. Doreen is survived by her Sister Ann Masson of Calgary, AB. Brother Jim Masson (Donna)of Pilot Mound MB. Her children Deborah (Joe ) Son Keith (Leeanne) and daughter Cindy (Mohan) they will miss her dearly. She has 8 grandchildren covering a span of 22 years. Raelynn and Brad from Debbie and Joe. Kaylin, Taryn and Carlyn from Keith and Leeanne. And Aidan, Vail and Torin from Cindy and Mo.
At retirement, Doreen traveled east to Barrie ON in 2009 to be close to Keith and Cindy’s families and enjoy her retirement years closer to her ‘little’ grandchildren. Some of her greatest joys were watching her grandchildren’s sports. She spent many hours on a soccer pitch, football field, ringette arena, swim meets and the last sport she became a fan in was wrestling. She would gladly travel where ever there was a tournament. You just had to mention what was going on and she would say ‘what time are you picking me up.’
Doreen was an active member in her local CNIB senior group as an adult when diagnosed with macular degeneration. She enjoyed her monthly day trips they offered in the area and weekly bowling outings. Doreen suffered from kidney disease as a child which she managed her whole life until going on dialysis in her last 5 years. She will be missed immensely by all who knew her. We ask you pay it forward with a kind word to a stranger and always keep your travelling spirit within you ignited. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the CNIB.
A private ceremony will be held later in the year with immediate family, as she wished. The recipe below is one of ‘g-mas’ favourites that she made many times at Christmas for friends and family. One that her children and grandchildren enjoyed. We hope that you too can enjoy these tasty treats the next Christmas season.
