Parcourez la nécrologie de Doran Craig Reid Monday October 28th 2024 résidant dans la province Ontario pour le détail des funérailles
Our beloved Doran passed away peacefully at home in Ottawa, Ontario on October 28, 2024, with his wife (Cara Harder), daughter (Kirsty), son-in-law (Herman Borrego), and his dog and constant companion, Bentley, by his side. He could feel our love until the end.
Doran is also survived by his son (Eric), mother (Gail Kellough), brother (Trevor), sister (Kara Kellough), his nieces and nephews, cousins, and all the people he met in life that he had such a lasting impact on.
Doran was predeceased by his father (Don Reid) and stepfather (Bryan Kellough).
Doran was born in Weyburn, Saskatchewan and spent his younger years in small prairie communities getting into innocent hijinks with his Reid cousins.
His father passed away tragically when Doran was two years old. When he was six, his stepfather came into his life. Doran spoke so lovingly of his new dad. Bryan was a brilliant father and instilled so many wonderful traits in his children that Doran embodied throughout his own life.
Bryan was with the RCMP, and the family finally settled down in Selkirk, Manitoba, where Doran spent his formative years, and most of his adult life.
Doran always excelled in sports. To say athletics was his passion would not do justice. Athletics was life itself for Doran! He excelled in basketball, hockey, badminton, and in his later years, pickleball. Of course, every other sport was fair game, and Doran ran the inaugural Manitoba Marathon in 1979. Whichever the sport, Doran brought an exemplary level of competitive spirit and sportsmanship. He loved the camaraderie of sport.
Doran attended Lord Selkirk Regional Comprehensive Secondary School where he excelled in sport and academics. He had a sparkling personality leading to many special life-long friendships.
After high school, Doran attended his first year of post-secondary education at the University of Manitoba, before transferring to the University of Winnipeg where he obtained his degree in Political Science. As we all now know, that wasn’t the end of Doran’s university life, but we will talk more about that later.
Doran met and married his first wife (Diane) and they raised Eric and Kirsty in Selkirk. Doran’s children were the light of his life. He was the best dad in the world. He happily doted on them and was an integral part of their lives. From coaching basketball to being a dance dad, Doran loved it all. Eric and Kirsty are left with so many memories and stories of Doran’s generosity, dedication, and love that will carry them through this very difficult loss.
Now, where were we…. Ah yes, athletics….continued university life….
Doran returned to the University of Winnipeg in 1989 to work at the Duckworth Centre service desk. This was the start of his impressive career with his beloved Wesmen taking on the role of Athletic Director in 2009. The UWinnipeg Athletics department prides itself on its close-knit Wesmen Family, and few people epitomized that sentiment more than Doran.
Doran is also fondly remembered by the Selkirk and basketball communities for his coaching and mentorship. He left his mark on both communities and changed the landscape forever. Go Sonics!
Doran proudly volunteered with the 1999 Pan American Games held in Winnipeg, putting his expertise to use ensuring the games were a resounding success. If there was sport, he was there.
In 2012, Doran met Cara. Despite her complete lack of sporting knowledge, they fell in love and married in 2015. Doran chose to retire from his career in athletics administration and they moved to Ottawa to start their new chapter together. Sport still remained in Doran’s life. He was welcomed into the Ottawa pickleball community, where, of course, he excelled at the sport and was loved by all.
Doran adored Cara. Their mutual friends quickly dubbed him ‘Lance Romance’ due to his constant doting. The feeling was mutual. Cara always knew how blessed she was to have Doran as her partner and to have found her soulmate. They were so very happy together and were practically inseparable.
Sadly, in early 2022, Doran was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia. ‘Lewy’ is a particularly devastating form of dementia. Doran fought hard, with Cara by his side every step of the way. She was his caregiver and made his comfort and happiness her priority. Doran’s dementia journey was a rapid one. The suffering proved to be too much, and he chose to pass on his own terms on October 28th with the help of MAiD (Medical Assistance in Dying) with the compassionate help of Dr. Naik. True to Doran’s nature, leaving Cara and his children in grief was his main concern. His love is a love that never wanes.
Doran’s family wishes to thank his medical team, Dr. Yu and Dr. Thomas at Bruyère Health Élisabeth Bruyère Hospital, Dr. MacMurray at The Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre, and the numerous nurses and aides that helped Doran along his journey.
Cara is working with the Wesmen administration to establish the Doran Reid Memorial Scholarship Fund to continue Doran’s legacy of supporting student athletes. Information on how to donate to the fund will be circulated through social media and other channels as it becomes available.
