Write a Tribute
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Donna-Mae McShane, 79, on November 6, 2024, in Surrey, BC. A beloved mother, sister, grandmother, cousin, aunt, and friend, she will be deeply missed.
Born on May 21, 1945, in Vancouver, Donna-Mae was the daughter of Don and Lil Egan. She grew up in Haney, BC, and attended Maple Ridge Secondary School. As a teenager, she became the Honored Queen at the Haney chapter of Job’s Daughters. Donna-Mae developed a love for cars and spent Friday nights attending local drag races. She was also a talented pianist, loved to sing, and proudly authored her own cook book, titled «If It’s Easy, Donna Does It».
Donna-Mae’s adventurous spirit led her to travel, including a time spent living in England, where she worked as a Keypunch Operator for Rolls-Royce. She later married Lan (John Lansing) McShane, and in 1979, they relocated from Maple Ridge to Garfield Street in New Westminster, BC. Donna-Mae worked as a legal assistant for Rhodes, Percival, McShane, while raising her family. In 1992, the family moved to Sherwood Park, Alberta, where Donna-Mae became a stay-at-home mom and discovered her artistic passion for painting.
In 2007, Donna-Mae and Lan returned to BC to retire in Abbotsford. They also purchased a small park model in a retirement community near Phoenix, Arizona, where they enjoyed their PT Cruiser convertible, countless cups of coffee and cappuccinos, and the company of friends while escaping the cold BC winters.
Donna-Mae is predeceased by her husband, Lan McShane, and her parents, Don and Lil Egan. She is survived by her children, Brian (Lisa) McShane and Adrienne Gbadamosi (née McShane); her brother, Rob (Sania) Egan; and her granddaughters, Leah McShane, Kate McShane, Tara McShane, and Zayna Gbadamosi. She will also be missed by her beloved parrot, Golly.
Of all the roles Donna-Mae held in her life, being a grandmother to Leah, Kate, Tara, and Zayna surpassed them all.
We are thankful for the quirky yet bright light she shone throughout her life — from passionately monitoring for palindromic odometer readings to selflessly sharing her homemade cinnamon twists, and for the many positive contributions she made to the lives of those around her. Despite challenges, including knee replacements, a hip replacement, and Well-Leg Closed Compartment Syndrome (requiring an emergency fasciotomy), Donna-Mae endured and persevered, always keeping on.
Donna-Mae infused as much color and beauty into her life as she could. May we all choose to live brightly, embrace who we are unapologetically, and persevere through life, just as she did, to the very end.
