Don has passed away peacefully after 80 long years of bringing joy and happiness to those who knew and loved him. He will be dearly missed by his partner Susan, daugher-in-law Alex, son Derek, and grandson Kol.
Don loved both the hustle and bustle of downtown life and the peace and tranquility of cottage country. Growing up, he studied music and played the accordion, saxophone, and french horn, later playing electric bass in a college band covering the radio hits of his era. While he was young, he also enjoyed tinkering with electronics, disassembling and reassembling transistor radios to see how the internal components worked. After spending time at Nortel and DeVry, this early interest led to a long career as professor of electrical engineering at Seneca College, where he passed on his knowledge and experience to thousands of students. As his career was winding down, he became a coordinator for the program and spent much of his time off-campus at various schools, drumming up interest in electrical engineering and planting the seeds of curiosity amongst today’s youth.
Don was one of the kindest, most generous, and positive of people. He would always lend a hand, always offer help in times of need, and was always making a joke and fun to be around.
He and Susan loved watching baseball games, going out to concerts, taking long walks, and going out for dinners whenever they were in the city. Weekends in summer were spent at the cottage in Dorset, hiking the surrounding area and paddle boating on the lake.
Don shared his love of radio controlled and rocketry hobbies with his son, and they spent endless hours building, flying, racing, breaking, and re-building various planes, cars, and rockets. They also shared a love of nature, portaging 50km through Algonquin Park one summer. Derek inherited his dad’s quirky sense of humor and love for music, both of which would surface in nearly every conversation they had.
Kol will miss his Pa Pa’s weekly phone calls, discussing everything from sports to school to the weather, or simply sharing with each other what they did that day. Pa Pa was super-proud of Kol’s sport, academic, and musical talents. Three generations of Sodoski boys even got together for a musical jam session – which honestly, was only a moderate success!
Don will be sorely missed by those that knew him. His love for life, kindness, and his boundless positive outlook set an enduring example. He will continue to live on through those who he touched.
