March 22, 1928-December 17, 2023
With sadness we announce the death of Donald (Don) Norman Fraser, 95, of Toronto on December 17, 2023. Born on March 22, 1928 in Winnipeg to Georgetta (née MacDougall) and Donald H. Fraser, Don grew up to be a true gentleman. He will be remembered for his kindness, enthusiasm, curiosity, creativity, and his appreciation of food, nature, literature, and jazz.
Don is survived by his loving children Donald S. Fraser (Jane Hudson), James Fraser (Alison Hope), and Bess Fraser (Stephen Ayres). He will be missed by his grandchildren Madeleine, Cameron, George, Hamish, and Grace. He was predeceased by his partner Eleanor Smith and his late wife Barb Fraser (née Southorn).
Don had a genuine love for life and cherished every moment spent in the company of loved ones, whether at home, Lake of the Woods, or at the family farm in Eastern Ontario. A natural in the kitchen, he had a unique ability to add a touch of sophistication and flair to every occasion—including a mid-week drop-in. Even if he didn’t have much in the larder, you would still be assured a gourmet meal, complete with candlelight, red wine, spirited conversation, and Ella on the turn-table.
After working for Simpsons in human resources, Don’s successful and fulfilling business career included roles in investment management at David Fry Fraser and corporate finance at Richardson Securities. For many years, Don was involved with the annual Canada Savings Bond campaign and was responsible for the CSB Employee Savings Program.
Don received his education at Grosvenor Public School and Kelvin High School in Winnipeg before furthering his studies at the University of Manitoba (BA, Economics) and the University of Toronto (MBA). In early retirement, he emersed himself in the Specialized Art Program at Central Technical School in Toronto, which gave him great joy and provided his family with many one-of-a-kind artworks. He also volunteered countless hours to the Schizophrenia Society of Canada and the Wellington County Historical Society.
The family would like to extend a debt of gratitude to Revera Leaside where Don lived the last years of his life, especially to his kind and loyal PSWs, Eleanor Santos and Chitra Chabot.
The Morley Bedford funeral home in Toronto is assisting the family with the arrangements and a family gathering will be held later. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that you consider a contribution to your local food bank in Don’s memory.
