Words cannot express our sorrow at the passing of Don on November 25, 2023 at 81 years of
age with his children at his side. Don was the devoted husband of Cheryl who preceded him in
death a mere month ago and whom he mourned greatly. He and Cheryl were married for 54
years and by his own admission he could not imagine life without her. He was the loving father
of Dawn Schmauch (Mike) and John McIninch (Allison). Proud Papa of Jacob, Cara and
Amelia. Donnie was the dear brother of Elaine MacKinnon (Elwyn) and was also preceded in
death by his siblings Bobby, Shirley and Helen. Uncle Donnie is also survived by several
nieces and nephews.
Don was a loving husband and father, he was so proud of his family and the life he had built
here in Ontario. Don was an iron worker, a trade he introduced his son to. He was retired from
McCrindle Steel where he worked as a welder. Don was steadfast, and at times a man of few
words but he could drop a one liner that would have you (and him) rolling with laughter. Don
loved his summers spent in the East Coast with Cheryl, and he often recalled fond memories of
their time spent there. He was born in St. Stephens New Brunswick and part of his heart
always longed for home. He did not play cards as often as Cheryl but oh how he’d laugh when
he’d finally beat her at a hand! He was an avid bike rider, and looked forward to his daily trail
rides. During retirement Don loved to work and spend time out in his shop and in his
greenhouse and garden. There wasn’t a thing he couldn’t fix or couldn’t grow.
Losing Dad so soon after Mom has left a void in our lives that will never be filled. He will be
forever loved and cherished by his family. To honour his wishes, cremation has taken place. In
light of their passing so close together a celebration of life honouring both him and our Mom
will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the
Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Amyloidosis Support Network.
