In Memory of Donald McCallum, F.I.C.E.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Donald McCallum, 97, of Toronto, Ontario, on Thursday, October 31, 2024 at St. Joseph’s Health Centre, a loving Husband, Father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather.
Donald was born and grew up in Beith, Scotland, and was the youngest of 4 boys. He attended Spiers School where he was voted “Best all-round boy” and received many other awards and prizes. When he reminisced about his school days in Beith there was no mistaking his fondness and pride for his Scottish roots.
He was a devoted husband to Margaret who he met in Dunoon, Scotland in 1949. Immediately smitten he pursued her with unending persistence until they married in 1953, celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary last January 2023. Margaret was the love of his life. He cared for her in her final years and was frequently commended by friends and neighbours for his tireless devotion. A hopeless romantic he would write Margaret beautiful poems on every birthday and anniversary up until she passed away last November.
Donald studied at Glasgow University where he received his degree in Civil Engineering at the age of 20. Upon completion he was called up for National Service and obtained his commission in April 1948. No. 35 Engineering Regiment, Royal Engineers was stationed in Derna, Cyrenaica, Libya where he was posted to RE Works Troop No. 3 and appointed Garrison Engineer Derna and Tobruk, responsible for repair of war-damaged buildings.
In 1953 he began his travels with Margaret (and subsequently their 3 daughters) to work on engineering projects of interest to him in Guyana, Nigeria, Trinidad, Barbados, Kuwait and Canada, from dams to bridges to expressways, and to marinas and sports venues. He also developed a flexible concrete system used for erosion control and a number of other purposes which has been utilized across Canada. He was well respected for his knowledge and experience and has left his professional mark all over the globe.
Donald maintained contact with his professional colleagues right up to the end and valued all his friendships. He loved attending singalong music nights with his neighbours, and thoroughly enjoyed drop-in visits for drinks and a chat from one special neighbour in particular. Everyone’s kindness and support along the way made a huge difference to him, and to his family. Donald’s other pastimes included Wordle, Connections, keeping up with the Blue Jays, golf, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. He was always very pleased with himself when he got the answers ahead of the contestants! And why not at age 97?!
Not only a devoted husband, Donald was a reliable and generous father to his 3 daughters who were fortunate to see the world because of his adventurous spirit. He loved his 3 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren with all his heart. He was a keen rugby player at school and at university, and if anything could brighten his day it was to hear about his great grandsons’ achievements in their rugby matches. Sharing rugby stories with Charlie and Tommy brought him incredible joy. FaceTime with his beautiful great granddaughters, Harriet and Jemima, cheered him up without fail as well.
Donald will be forever loved and deeply missed by his family, friends and colleagues. He is pre-deceased by his wife, Margaret, and his daughter, Joy; survived by his daughter, Angela and son-in-law, Nick; his daughter, Jennifer; his grandchildren, Timothy, Kate and Jonathan; and, great grandchildren, Charlie, Harriet, Tommy and Jemima. A service will be held on Friday, November 8, 2024 at St. John’s Dixie Visitation Centre, 757 Dundas St. E., Mississauga, ON.
