Parcourez la nécrologie de Donald Joseph Beaton 1943 2024 résidant dans la province Nova Scotia pour le détail des funérailles
The family of
Donald Joseph Beaton, of Brierly Brook, Antigonish County, is grieving
the loss of its patriarch and anchor. Donnie was a humble, quiet, but
profoundly wise and resourceful man, respected by his colleagues,
friends, family, and adored by his children and grandchildren. Donnie,
age 81, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of November
29th at St. Martha’s Regional
Hospital.
Born in
Antigonish, he was the oldest child of the late James Morrison and
Catherine Bridget (Murphy) Beaton. Donnie attended St. Andrew Rural
High where he was always a good student and was actively involved in
many sports, including basketball and hockey, and student affairs. It
was here that he established close friendships that lasted his entire
life. After completing one year at St.FX Donnie’s
adventurous spirit took him to Toronto where he worked as an
ironworker and eventually started his career in the insurance
industry.
Donnie worked
for Co-Operators Insurance for 35 years, as an insurance Claims
Adjustor and rose to the position of District Claims Manager during
which time he attained the designation of Fellow Insurance Institute
of Canada.
Donnie was
very proud of his Scottish heritage and of Gaelic language and
culture, speaking Gaelic and always promoting Celtic history and
tradition. He was a longtime director for the Antigonish Highland
Society, including two terms as president, and was chair of the
Antigonish Highland Games committee for two
terms.
He held a
strong interest in local genealogy and history, and he was a member of
the Antigonish Heritage Association. He was an avid reader
of historical and political books and articles. Donnie was tirelessly
generous of his time, expertise and energy in the local community. He
served on the Board of Directors for the Bergengren Credit Union, and
volunteered his time at the Red Cross throughout his retirement.
Donnie’s love of travel and history took him to many places
around the world, especially to the finest distilleries in
Scotland.
Donnie’s love of sports was evident. Not only
did he play AGR Softball, Gentlemen’s League hockey, but
also gave unwavering support of anything hockey related, particularly
the Antigonish Bulldogs and St.FX X-Men. He volunteered his time to
special events like the National Midget Softball Tournament and for
Big Brothers Big Sisters. He spent many summers golfing with friends
locally and in the Cape Breton Highlands, and skating and boating on
Gaspereaux Lake. Some his fondest memories are from spending summers
at the cottage and beach with his family, especially his
grandchildren.
Donnie was a
passionate blueberry farmer for over 50 years, cultivating numerous
fields in Antigonish and Pictou county as well as helping others tend
to their harvests. He was a member of the Wild Blueberry Growers
Association of Nova Scotia and actively involved in promoting and
supporting the local blueberry industry.
Donnie is
survived by his children Brenda, Halifax; Allana, Antigonish;
grandchildren Rory, Oliver and Amira. He is also survived by his
siblings, Elizabeth, Brierly Brook; Francis (Judy) Alabama; Mary
(Greg) Whitehorse; Effie, Antigonish; and also, his longtime
companion, Joan MacDonald.
Predeceased by
both parents, wife Deanie Munroe Beaton, brothers Allan and Billy, as
well as 2 children in infancy.
We would like
to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff of St. Martha’s
Regional Hospital, particularly the 3rd floor GARU and PCU. We would
also like to thank all the staff and residents at Green Meadows for
their loving care and friendship over the past few
months.
Visitation
will be held Monday at C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College Street,
Antigonish, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm. Funeral Mass will be
held Tuesday at 11:00am at St. Ninian Cathedral, Antigonish, with
Reverend Danny MacLennan presiding. Burial in the parish
cemetery.
In Memoriam,
