Berlinghoff, Donald (Joe) Theodore
On August 10, 2024 Joe left us peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family. He is predeceased and welcomed to his heavenly rest by his mother Yvonne (nee Shaw), father Theodore, his beloved son Kevin, granddaughter Ava, brother Earl (Claudette), sister Linda (John), and brother in-law Cleary.
Survived by his loving wife of 56 years Lillian (nee Muise), and adoring daughters Carrie Ann (Martin), Tracey (Doug), and Tami (Gord). Grandfather to Alyssa, Abi, Tanner, Taylor and Harper; and great-grandfather to Amelia. Joe is also survived by his twin sister Donna (Norm), and brothers and sisters-in law Wayne (Jackie), Theresa (Chess), Aaron (Karen), and Billy (Carm).
Joe was born and raised in Matheson, Ontario on January 28, 1947, and was married to Lillian on May 11, 1968. They settled down and made a home here in Welland, where Joe started his apprenticeship with Union Carbide, excelling in his education at Niagara College and receiving his certification as a Millwright. An energetic man with a strong work ethic, he further excelled at his position at UCAR for well over 30 years before moving on to TRW where he worked and continued to make many great and lasting friendships until his well-deserved retirement. During his career as a Millwright, he approached his work as he did with everything else in life, with determination and perfection.
His family above all else was his greatest love. After tragically losing his son at a young age, Joe and Lillian moved with Carrie to the place they call home to this day, and in due course they added Tracey and Tami to complete this beautiful family. Years later, his grandchildren and great-grandchild arrived to enhance his family life even more, without ever forgetting the heart-breaking loss of his granddaughter, Ava.
A skilled athlete and sportsman, Joe loved playing sports like golf and baseball, hunting and fishing. He also was an avid fan of watching major league sports, especially his Toronto Blue Jays, Chicago Black Hawks and Green Bay Packers.
One only needed to step inside Joe’s garage to see his passion for all things related to woodworking, home improvement and auto repair. He was a perfectionist and his attention to detail and imperturbable resolve shows through in the various projects and beautiful handicrafts that he made for family and friends through the years.
He will be fondly remembered as the charismatic, fun-loving, and energetic man that we all knew and loved. People gravitated to him in social settings because of his enthusiasm, wit, intelligence, and sense of humour. You knew an event would be a fun one if Joe was going to be a part of it. He always had a joke, a one-liner, or a story ready for any occasion. He also knew just how to lighten the mood with some much-needed levity during an awkward moment or tough situation. The stories he was the subject of and the ones that he shared with those fortunate enough to have been a part of his life will be shared for many years to come.
We all love and miss you, Joe, Dad, Papa, Grandpa and Great-Grandpa.
We want to give a special thank you to his palliative care nurses from Paramed and a thank you to his amazing overnight PSW’s from Bayshore and a very special thank you to his regular PSW’s from St. Elizabeth’s.
There will be visitation on Saturday, August 17 from 1pm- 3pm and 5pm-7pm with a Eulogy following at Cudney Funeral Home at 241 West Main Street, Welland. A further celebration of Joe’s life will be held at a later date.
