Donald George Wiebe, born November 27, 1940, in Waldheim Saskatchewan, died peacefully Friday, March 15, 2024, at the Parkridge Center, Saskatoon.
He lived in Waldheim, St. Catherine’s, ON, and Dalmeny, SK as a preschooler. The family moved to Saskatoon in 1947, where Don attended Mayfair School and Saskatoon Technical Collegiate. He quit school at 16 and began a life-long career as a building mover, becoming a co-owner of Wiebe Movers at 28 with brother Bob, and later with Vern MacEwen.
Don was not a fan of formal education, but never stopped learning. He had a clipboard filled with graph paper beside his favorite chair, where he made sketches and notes of new ideas that would make a job easier, safer and more practical. His biggest project was the design of a set of 12 hydraulic self-levelling dollies that were used to move many of the 377 grain elevators moved all over Saskatchewan, Alberta, and Manitoba. He took pride in a job well done. Attending conventions of the International Association of Structural Movers in Florida and California were a highlight of his working life.
The family spent many happy weekends at their cabin at Big Shell Lake. Winter holidays in Hawaii, Mexico and Jamaica, and cruises to Alaska and the Panama Canal created lasting memories. He enjoyed many road trips within Canada, a favorite destination being southern B.C. Don was very proud of his family and enjoyed weekend projects for Larry and Jan in Winnipeg and helping Barb and Randy at their acreage at Osler, including overseeing the move of their house “up the hill” to escape flood waters.
He leaves his family with a special memory for every day of the year. Don consistently thought the best of others. He was forgiving and difficult to offend. He was a quiet, thoughtful, and kind man. His thankfulness touched the caregivers at St. Angela Merici Personal Care Home and Parkridge Center. His quiet wit and humour were enjoyed by all who knew him. He put the needs of his family and others before his own. He was a very good man.
Don is survived by his loving wife, Gladys, of 60 years less 13 days; his son Larry (Jan) and their children Graham (Chantel) and Lauren (Jared), all of Winnipeg; and his daughter Barb (Randy) Priebe of Osler and their daughter Heather of Saskatoon. He also leaves his siblings Bob (Leona), Joan (Terry) McHale, Harold (Sandra), Gary (Shirl), Glen (Corinne) and Julie (Wally) Ironmonger, and their families; special sister-in-law Verda Evans and her children Shannon (Ross) and their daughter Lark; and Corey; and sister-in-law Darlene Penner and daughter Lorie (Paul).
Private burial at Woodlawn Cemetery in Saskatoon. Private family memorial. The family wishes to thank all the staff at Eastridge One, Parkridge Center for their loving and compassionate care the last four months. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan or the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
