Donald Frank
Davenport Don was with his wife,
Trina, when he passed away peacefully under the skillful and
compassionate care of the Palliative Unit at St. Martha’s
Hospital on February 14, 2024. Born in 1944 in Framingham,
Massachu-setts, he moved with his family to Franklin, North Carolina
during his high school years. There he spent a lot of his free time
successfully combing the ruby mine’s tailings for rubies
which he learned to polish and facet and then traded for other gems
and gemology equipment. He became a talented self-taught guitarist. He
graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a
double major in Mathematics and Slav-ic Languages and taught Russian
as a TA while working toward his masters degree. There he met and
mar-ried Katrina Pyne. The young couple spent two years in Maine,
where he taught Russian and Mathematics at the Hinckley School and
taught himself pottery. In 1970 they immigrated to Canada and settled
in Jordan-ville, Nova Scotia, where Don worked at the fish plant in
Port Bickerton, fished for eels, and worked for Sher-brooke Village as
an antique buyer. While looking for old post office equipment he
discovered a Cape Cod house built around 1810 that was scheduled to be
demolished. He was offered the house if he would move it. The couple
took the house apart over the winter, numbering all the pieces and
storing them in a barn. In the spring they bought a piece of land in
College Grant, reassembled the house there, and for 17 years lived a
back-to-the-land lifestyle where they welcomed and raised their son,
Ethan, and Don farmed, cut pulp, grew Christmas trees and blueberries
and started College Grant Pottery. He taught pottery night classes in
Afton and Antigonish. He eventually sold College Grant Pottery to his
apprentice, Brian Segal, and using what he had learned reconstructing
the house, became a skilled carpenter, working many happy years with
Dwight How of Harvest Builders. In 1990 he decided to start another
pottery business, Touchstone Pottery, and was joined by his wife
fulltime and his son part time. Retiring in 2001, he has enjoyed
gardening, explor-ing NS by kayak and bike, cooking, volunteering at
the food bank and with the Antigonish International Film Festival,
goofing around on the internet, and vacationing with family. He is
survived by his wife of 56 years Katrina, his son Ethan (Suzanne),
granddaughters Sydney and Savannah, brothers Clark (Jennifer) and Mike
(Tracy) and many nieces and nephews. He leaves behind a trail of
beautiful woodwork and pottery and a family and many friends who will
greatly miss him and fondly remember his lovely sense of humour and
gen-tle manner.
A small family
celebration of life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of
flowers, donations could be made to the Palliative Care Unit at St.
Martha’s Hospital
