Don Hoye Obituary
Don Hoye
May 27, 1951 – July 1, 2024
After a brief battle with illness, Don passed away peacefully on July 1, 2024, with his wife Donna by his side.
Don was a loving husband, father, grandpa, Papa Don, friend, and so much more to those who knew him. Don treasured his family and so it was important to him to be there to celebrate, cheer them on or just spend time together.
Don was driven by curiosity, had a unique sense of humour, and became a self-taught jack of all trades, master of many.
He was predeceased by his parents, Dorothy and William Hoye, aunt Florence Hoye, sister Diane Oystrek, late wife Sheila Hoye, mothers-in-law Ida Williamson and Josephine Elliott, father-in-law Bob Elliott, and brothers-in-law Ted Purvis and Ross Williamson.
Don is survived by his wife Donna, children Bree Hoye (Vlad Snovida), Bryce Hoye (Sam MacKinnon), Sherene Smoluk (Brad), Sharlene Yarish (Larry), Rayna Debow and many special relatives. He also leaves behind his grandchildren: Bethany (Curt), Jesiah (Chanelle), Trinity (Colin), Riley (Rachel), Mackenzie (Halle), Nick (Alana), Lyric (Ryan), Zara (Josh), Blake and Lila, as well as great-grandchildren Brooklyn, Abby, Halle, Brielle, Espey, Genesis, Cillian, Bella, Willow, and Declan.
Don was born and raised in West Kildonan where he met his best friend Ric Liewicki who he had many adventures with, including the Kenora Bass International. Growing up, Don spent his summers at the Hoye and Baker family cottages in Matlock and Delta Beach. When his children were young, he moved to the Maples where he spent the next 30 years.
Don started working at Brooks Equipment when he was 18 and was a dedicated employee for over 25 years. He went on to work for Marr’s Leisure, Doyle’s Supply, and retired at the North West Company, in the same building where he began his working career with Brooks, decades earlier.
In 1976, at the age of 25, he purchased a tree-covered lot on War Eagle Lake in western Ontario. Together with family and friends, he cleared the land and built the cottage, which he referred to as his “piece of paradise.” In the 1990s, after he and Donna married and the family grew, he built a guest cottage, again with the help of loved ones.
The lake has been a gathering place for loved ones, where he formed many special memories, friendships and a lake family. Most mornings at the lake began with Howard, solving world issues over a cup of coffee.
Don took great joy in spending hours on the water teaching people how to fish and showing them the beauty of the lake through his eyes.
He was known as a helper, Mr. Fix-It, the king of make-work projects, a putterer, and a passionate caretaker of the lake ecosystem. The lake was a gift that he loved, and to share it with everyone brought him the greatest joy.
In his final years, Don and Donna moved to Selkirk, where he found a whole community of friends in his new neighbourhood and through his walks and drives with his dogs.
His family is grateful for the warmth and care he received at HSC. Thank you to the staff on unit GD5.
