In Celebration of
Domenic «Poppi» Molinaro
September 23, 1934 –
May 29, 2023
It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we share the passing of our dearly adored Domenic Molinaro, lovingly known as “Poppi”. On May 29, 2023, at the age of 88, Domenic bid farewell to this world, leaving behind a legacy of love and kindness. His beloved wife, Lina Molinaro, his children Antonella & Joseph Castro, Marilu & Sam DiSanto, Vincent & Tina Molinaro, and Robert & Andrea Molinaro, along with his grandchildren Julian, Madeline, Luca, Isabella, Giuliana, Cristiano, Evianna, and Raffaella, many loving brothers and sisters, nieces, nephews, as well as numerous colleagues, employees, and friends will genuinely mourn his loss.
Domenic was a devoted husband to his sweetheart and the love of his life Lina for 55 wonderful years. Their bond, built on a lifetime of shared dreams, serves as a testament of enduring love. Her love was his guiding light, leading him through life with grace and tenderness. Their devotion and partnership formed the foundation of their lives, offering unending support and joyfully celebrating every milestone together. Lina brought light to his darkest days and warmth to his coldest nights. Lina was his anchor, his strength, his soul mate. He will forever be by her side whispering words of love and endearment. Their one true love is unbreakable, and their connection remains everlasting. Domenic and Lina’s love story lives on through their children and grandchildren.
Above and beyond all, Domenic cherished his family. As a father, he was an inspiration to his children, living by example and guiding them with wisdom and unconditional affection. Through his actions, he taught them his values of family and shaped their lives with his profound influence. To his children, Domenic instilled independence providing guidance, support, and unwavering love. He nurtured their dreams and made them believe that they could achieve anything they set their minds to, giving them opportunity that he never had as an immigrant. Domenic’s love for his family knew no bounds and all of their accomplishments brought him immeasurable pride.
Poppi Domenic’s legacy lives on through his eight adoring grandchildren. He lived to enjoy them sharing his love of everything Italian, skiing, tennis, cars, and soccer. He cherished and adored them and showered them with endless big hugs and wet kisses. Whenever they visited, Poppi would delight in preparing zabaglione and peperonata for them, creating everlasting memories of love, family and togetherness.
Poppi was a lighthearted soul who found immense joy in the simple pleasures of life. Nothing brought him greater delight than gathering around a full table of food, friends and family. With open arms and a beaming smile, he proudly embraced his beloved sons in-law and daughters in-law: He was so over the moon with his children’s life partners whose presence filled Poppi’s heart with joy and gratitude. Collectively they formed a tight-knit bond known as the “out-laws”, creating and sharing many treasured memories.
Domenic’s life exemplified sacrifice, passion and perseverance. In 1957, as an immigrant from Nicastro, Calabria, Italy, with just the clothes on his back, he had no crew, no money, no office, and no truck, he embarked on a long path towards a construction career. He possessed a desire for success and an ambition for accomplishment. Overcoming significant obstacles, he completed projects ahead of schedule and under budget, setting the stage for a remarkable journey that spanned decades. In 1963, Domenic founded Matterhorn Construction, which he ran from his kitchen table with the genuine support of his devoted wife, Lina.
In mid-life, he began to work alongside his twin sons, Vincent and Robert, and eventually his son-in-law Sam joined, forming Molinaro Group. Domenic imparted his work ethic and determination, showing his sons the value of pursuing their passions relentlessly. Together, they continued the family business, carrying on Domenic’s legacy with honour and pride. Domenic’s love and guidance will forever be ingrained in both his sons and daughters hearts and all the work they continue to do. Jointly, Vincent, Robert and Sam will continue the family business, carrying on Domenic’s legacy in ways that made him immensely proud.
Domenic’s impact extended beyond his professional accomplishments in the building community. He left an indelible mark on the skyline, creating structures that stood as testaments to his skill and passion.
Throughout his life, Domenic formed sincere and genuine connections and long lasting friendships. His warmth, and undisputable personality made him a companion for life. His best man, Pietro Strangis, and his loyal right-hand man in his construction business, Rodger Park, remained close to his heart until the end. Domenic’s friends were always welcomed into his home, where they shared many meals, memories, card games and an abundance of laughter.
In his later years, Domenic found supportive friends at the Amica Retirement Community, where they reminisced about their past, shared glasses of wine and formed true friendships. He was truly blessed with his dedicated caregivers Kim, Genevieve, and Elma known as «Poppi’s Angels.» Their love and companionship brightened his days and ensured his comfort. We will forever be grateful to their unconditional support and care.
Domenic’s passion for sports was unmistakable as he wholeheartedly embraced both tennis and skiing. His passion for tennis was celebrated through the annual Molinaro Classic Tournament, a heartfelt tribute to his enduring devotion to the game. To this day, his children and grand-children continue to hold the annual tournament. He not only enjoyed these sports himself but also insisted that his children, grandchildren, in-laws, and friends partake in the same activities. Domenic went above and beyond by personally teaching them how to ski, driving carloads of family and friends in the trusty old station wagon, carrying their equipment and using a construction rope to guide his four children down the slopes. His determination to share his love for these sports created lasting bonds and memories among his loved ones.
Domenic’s desire for travel brought joy, laughter, and a heartfelt appreciation of the World’s beauty as his family explored together. From his beloved Winter home in Jupiter, Florida, to destinations like Italy, Mexico, Bahamas, Prince Edward Island, and his final family adventure in Portugal. These precious memories will remain deep in all of our minds and souls forever.
Those who knew and loved Poppi Domenic will remember his character, a beautiful blend of playfulness and determination, kindness and tenacity. He will be remembered for his unforgettable, stunning sky blue eyes, his passion, his generous spirit, unwavering kindness, and his profound love for his family. As we gather to celebrate his amazing journey, we hold him close in our hearts, sharing stories that evoke both laughter and tears.
Despite Domenic’s immense success over the years, he remained extremely humble and exhibited tremendous generosity towards his community. He wholeheartedly supported numerous charities, hospitals and organizations in Burlington and Hamilton. He also generously contributed to Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish and St. Anthony Parish, demonstrating his commitment to his faith and joy of helping others.
With great tenderness and compassion, we come together to embrace Poppi Domenic. Loved ones will gather at Bay Gardens Funeral Home, 947 Rymal Road East, Hamilton, on Tuesday, June 6th, from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Vigil prayers will be at 3:30 p.m.
On Wednesday, June 7th, at 11:00 am, we will join in a Funeral Mass at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, 934 Hwy 8, Stoney Creek. Following the Mass, entombment at Holy Sepulchre Catholic Cemetery, 600 Spring Gardens Road, Burlington.

In lieu of flowers, we encourage you to gather your loved ones, raise your glass of vino and share a beautiful meal – a testament to the joy Domenic brought to the world. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Amna Hiweish and the compassionate doctors and staff at the Hamilton General Hospital Emergency Room and Stroke Unit. Your dedicated care and support during Domenic’s time will always be cherished.
Domenic’s departure leaves a profound loss and sadness in all of our lives. His legacy of immense sacrifice, unending devotion to his family and tremendous generosity will live forever in our hearts.
