Obituary of Diane Prodahl
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Diane Prodahl (nee Gerwing) on January 5, 2024 in the city of Lloydminster, AB at the age of 72 years old. Diane passed away peacefully in her sleep in her own home surrounded by her husband, Brian, and her twin sister, Donna. She fought a hard, yet inevitably futile battle with pancreatic cancer.
Diane is survived by: her husband, Brian Prodahl; daughter, Lynn Kvill (Jason) and their daughters, Chloe, Hannah, Paige and Natalie; son, Tony Prodahl (Janette) and their sons, Adam and Brayden; twin sister, Donna Sarauer (Glen); sister, Joan Gerwing-Grahl (Keith); brother, Murray (Susan); brother, Stephen (Lori); sister-in-law, Vicky; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Diane was predeceased by: her brother, Tom; sister, Judy; mother, Leona Gerwing; father, Albert Gerwing; and sister-in-law, Kathy Gerwing.
The Prayer Service for Diane will be conducted from St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church, Lloydminster, AB on Thursday, January 11, 2024 at 7:00 PM.
The Mass of Christian Burial for Diane will be held at St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church, Lloydminster, AB on Friday, January 12, 2024 at 10:30 AM.
Donations in memory of Diane can be made to EPIC program (Edmonton Pancreaticobiliary Inflammation and Cancer).
Cancer of the pancreas and bile duct is a serious disease that often carries a poor prognosis. The 5-year survival, even with markedly improved surgical techniques, is less than 20%. Pancreatic cancer often is diagnosed late. In addition, patients can experience delays as they navigate between various specialties for investigations and treatment.
The EPlC (Edmonton Pancreaticobiliary lnflammation and Cancer) program was developed to streamline the access to care for patients presenting with pancreaticobiliary (pancreas, bile duct, and ampulla) cancers. We are currently conducting a 6-month pilot project ar the UAH with an anticipated completion date of Dec 31, 2023. This program launched in July 2023 and Diane was the first patient enrolled in our program.
We are aiming to expand this program to the entire Edmonton Zone in early 2024. A coordinated care pathway (CCP) has been created with multidisciplinary expert input. This group involves experts from gastroenterology, hepatobiliary surgery, diagnostic
imaging, and medical oncology. Other disciplines that form part of the CCP include social, palliative, and dietary services.
Our hope is that the EPIC Program will improve access to healthcare, coordinate services, decrease wait times, and improve the experience and quality of life for patients diagnosed with pancreas and bile duct cancers.
