‘First came the date of birth, followed by the date of tears.
What matters most of all is the dash between those years.’
In the early hours of March 30, 2024 Jim passed away after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Dody, his wife of 51 years, remained by his side throughout it all, ensuring the everlasting love and support continued to be present in those final moments.
Jim was a man of few words, but many actions. It was those actions, talents, joys, adventures and passions, that summarize his dash to all who were lucky enough to experience them during Jim’s near quarter century.
Those who knew Jim best made sure to recognize that his die-hard love of the Montreal Canadiens was unwavering and resolute.
His consistent ‘Go Habs Go’ cheer, as he loyally wore his Habs jersey, was a joy to hear during any game. If the game wasn’t on, Jim was always looking forward to the next hunting or fishing trip to spend time with close friends in the great outdoors. The passion in his voice was joyous when he talked about ‘the one that got away’, helping you overcome a fear of putting a worm on a hook, or when describing how beautiful the ‘Starr Lake Hilton’ looked (his moose-hunting cabin) against the backdrop of the falling snow each October.
Jim stayed occupied with sketching, puzzles, and the persistent ‘honey do’ list for home improvement projects. One of his biggest endeavours that showed off his handyman talent was building an entire home for his family. He also had a flair for cooking and there
were several occasions we looked forward to his famous meatballs, lasagna and Caesar salad.
As a dad, he supported all his family’s endeavours with pride. He proudly attended plays and performances, speeches and presentations, both watched and coached sports, and took great pleasure in being there for all of it.
With all that was happening in his life, Jim’s quiet demeanour did not slow his volunteer-friendly spirit. This led to fulfilling and meaningful roles as a Scout leader and the Chair for the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, happily giving back to the community that supported him. His accomplishments led to his being bestowed with the Queen Elizabeth II medal awarded to Canadians who made outstanding and exemplary contributions to their communities.
Jim’s greatest achievement was his refusal to accept the short life expectancy he was given in 1989, and instead, beat all odds and turned that into 35 more years. His warrior spirit never faltered. His resilience was undeniable. His enduring lust for life was definite.
He was a loving husband and partner to Dody for over 50 years, devoted father to Matthew and Jaimee, proud father-in-law to Sarah and Ben, and joyous grandfather to Nate, Jack, Willow and River. Jim was a thoughtful brother to Anna, Mario, Joey, Carlo, Julio, Michael and Johnny and was predeceased by his parents Rocco and Rita and brother Frank. Jim’s supporters and friends were numerous, especially Peter Albano who stood by through it all and was the very definition of a true friend for over 30 years, and Bill Beckett, his lifelong hunting and fishing partner and friend to the end.
A loyal and supportive family man when he was with us, we take comfort in the fact that his heaven consists of unlimited peaceful fishing moments, taking time to prepare the perfect meatball and watching his beloved Habs win the Stanley Cup, year after year.
Amidst the tears that softly flow, his lengthy journey, his dash did grow.
Through love and resilience, his legacy thrives, touching hearts, echoing in countless lives.
We will miss you more than you know.
Special thanks to all the people and medical staff who helped Jim over the years, most especially Dr. Annette Hay, Tracy, Dr. Reynolds and everyone at Friendly Manor Nursing Home who demonstrated compassion and care during his final months.
