Obituary
It is with very broken hearts that the family of the late Derek Graham Tilley announce his passing. Derek passed peacefully away at the age of 73 years on August 3, 2024, surrounded by his loving family as well as his caring family at the Lionel Kendall Hospice Centre.
Derek was born in La Scie to Doris and Whitfield Tilley on October 1, 1950. He spent his whole life in the town that he dearly loved. After completing high school, Derek attended Memorial University where he graduated with a Master’s degree in Education. After graduating, Derek and Linda were married on August 8, 1975, and moved to Baie Verte where Derek taught for 3 years. They then moved to La Scie, built a home and started their life there together. Derek taught at Cape John Collegiate for 38 years. Teaching high school students was always Derek’s passion as well as being active in coaching both girls and boys softball; spending hours on the field with his students. He was dearly loved by them all.
Derek had many accomplishments throughout his life but above all, his greatest accomplishments were his two children Ryan and Nikita. Derek was an exceptional father and mentor through their lives. He was always there to give advice, love and to cuddle them in his peaceful arms. That peaceful feeling will never be forgotten. Derek taught them many life lessons but most importantly he showed them how to be a kind person. In 2022, Derek and Linda were blessed with a precious grandson, Tate. Tate was the apple of Derek’s eye.
Over the years, Derek was a committed member of the Kinsmen Club of La Scie, was actively involved in the Zion United Church Men’s Fellowship and was a town council member for several years. For a couple of those years, he took on the role as La Scie’s Mayor and enjoyed it thoroughly. Derek had such love and passion for his little community, his home. He was involved in helping the young and old in any way he could. A lasting impact was left on anyone he knew. His infectious smile could light up a room and it will never be forgotten.
Leaving to mourn, but also to celebrate his legacy is his devoted and loving wife of 49 years,Linda, his amazing son whom which he was so proud of Ryan (Kristie), his treasure and forever princess Nikita (Evan) and his two grandsons “poppy’s precious boy” Tate, and Parker. Derek loved having play time with Tate and hearing all of Parker’s hockey stories, he was so proud. Derek also leaves behind brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews and a large circle of friends.
Derek is predeceased by his beloved mother and father, Doris and Whitfield Tilley, his mother-in-law, Harriett Ryan, father-in-law, Maxwell Ryan, sisters, Edna Fudge and Barbara Budgell.
As per Derek’s wishes, cremation has already taken place.
Public visitation will take place from Zion United Church, La Scie, NL on Sunday, August 11, 2024 from 7-9 pm.
The funeral service will take place to remember and celebrate this amazing man at Zion United Church, La Scie NL on Monday, August 12, 2024 at 2 pm, with Reverend Harry Oake officiating.
Derek’s last 8 weeks on earth were spent being loved and cared for at the Lionel Kendall Hospice Centre in Grand Falls-Windsor, NL. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to this amazing facility. Donation envelopes will be provided at the church during the service or you can DONATE HERE
