Obituary of Dennis Patrick Hallick
Dennis Patrick Hallick, (Dec 29, 1940 – June 28, 2023) passed away with his family by his side on Wednesday, June 28th in Winnipeg.
He leaves to mourn his loving wife, Lorraine (of 52 years); sons Dean (Lisa), Kent (Rhea) and Justin (Lesley); grandchildren Julia, Sadie, Elli, Josh, Elin, Luke, Zoey and Lily; and brother John (Kathy).
He was predeceased by his parents, Alphonse Hallick and Ruth (Cox) Hallick, many aunts, uncles, cousins and close friends.
Dennis was born in Winnipeg and grew up in a number of Manitoba communities (Winnipeg, Lac du Bonnet, Grandview, Minnedosa and Brandon) in his early years. Following graduation from high school in Brandon he worked in several short-term jobs prior to and while attending university classes.
He attended Manitoba Teachers College in 1964-65 and entered the teaching profession in 1965 as a teacher at Crane School where he met and later married Lorraine (Stefanyshen), the love of his life. From Crane School he moved to Dalhousie School. While at Crane and Dalhousie Schools this was the beginning of a long commitment to Education in Manitoba. While at Dalhousie School he participated in a number of professional organizations and had the opportunity to visit many schools and school divisions where he made a variety of presentations over the years. During that time, he co-authored and published a curriculum support publication and participated in a provincial curriculum committee where he contributed to and wrote parts of the provincial curriculum. He and Lorraine have great memories of a period when they both participated as instructors in a summer school for teachers in Montserrat, West Indies.
He and his family later moved to Portage la Prairie in 1977 where he served as the principal of North Memorial School. Following retirement, he worked with student teachers from the University of Brandon and the University of Winnipeg.
While in Portage la Prairie he was able to follow the activities of his three sons and participate in a variety of community activities including the Lions Club, Southport Aerospace and the School Board of Trustees. He was also involved in the planning and building of the Glesby Centre. Dennis treasured the many varied experiences that he had while living in rural communities and, later, in Winnipeg.
Following retirement and a move to Winnipeg where his sons and their families were living, he was brought closer to his immediate family and large extended family, where he thoroughly enjoyed many family activities, especially the family reunions.
During his quiet times he was in contact with close and long-time friends and spent time collecting and enjoying a variety of music.
He enjoyed planning special events for the family, his workplace and his community. Above all, he treasured the time he spent with his sons and grandchildren and shared as much time with them as possible.
He was always grateful for a loving wife, a close-knit family, a vocation that he thoroughly enjoyed, and a number of close, long-time friends.
Dennis left a message to all aspiring dads that all children need our LOVE, our TIME and a MORAL COMPASS for their lives.
Deepest gratitude to John and Kathy Hallick for their unwavering support.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Riverview Health Centre Foundation.
His family will celebrate his life privately.
