Two pairs of weeping eyes and two pairs of flushed wet cheeks and two faces rested upon the chest of Denise Haskell (nee Kroeker), two shaking arms clasped together around her middle as two fellow sufferers clung to each of them. She inhaled shallowly and exhaled for the last time and in the mind of those two children who clung to their mother it had broken the sound barrier. A soft motherly hand gently roused the shoulders of the two sobbing girls and they looked to ever-present Auntie Jenny as if in disbelief in spite of the comforting embrace of Alex Gallo (Hannah) and she.
Denise Haskell was born in Red Lake, Ontario on June 13th 1964 to Irene Gosselin (Leduc) and Dennis Kroeker. She was accompanied in childhood by sisters Themara Bolton (Sean) and Laura Haskell (Norman) throughout her life, and was followed by the blessed addition of a sweet step-sister Amanda Gosselin. She grew into a beautiful young woman with intelligence and wit, giving her heart and marrying Clifford P. Haskell on June 2nd, 1990. Together they had two daughters; Zoe Rose Mary Haskell (b.1991) and Hannah Marie Haskell (Alex) (b.1998)
Denise had an incredible spirit for fun and childhood play and sought to be close to her beloved nieces and nephews Christie Marsh (Jordan), William Haskell (Jessica) Ryan, and Scott Smith and spent many holidays with Jaydon and Grace Jewett at the house once owned by her mother Irene and made all the more beautiful and sentimental by her sister Themara.
She graduated from the Law and Security course from Confederation College and began a devoted career of security in various detention centers as well as a longer-lasting time spent at Thunder Bay’s casino before having to retire due to a significant back and neck injury which caused a lifetime amount of pain and discomfort.
Denise was an incredibly creative woman with a love of poetry, reading, and art. She could be found with a cup of coffee on her favourite chair doing a ‘puzzle’ in her ‘puzzle book’ while listening to music. She enjoyed the company of her children, drinking coffee while joking and teasing, but her eyes shone brightest whenever she spoke of her granddaughter Rose Haskell (b. 2022). She often longed for her granddaughter when apart from her and uplifted at others when the spritely toddler of her eldest daughter danced and made sure to study all the knick-knacks at Nana’s house. Despite the physical pain felt, Denise was ready to play and get down on the floor with her precious Rose. Denise could be seen looking at pictures of Rose and sharing them with others while boasting proudly of the same intelligence and humour she shared with her granddaughter. Her love of animals surpassed her preference for human company at times and held to her heart were her best fur-grandbaby Jack (DigDog) the jack-russell-mix terrier, as well as two orange tabbies named Lilly and Timothy, and the ‘king of the kingdom’ Hiro the wise black cat
Denise’s passing was sudden and immense grief was felt amongst the many who loved her, but in her ever-selfless nature, she ensured that her final wishes and other documents were carefully placed to be accessed easily as was in her very organised and meticulous nature. As per her wishes, there will be no official service, but all are welcome to share their stories, photos, and memories.
