Denis Michael Falvey CD, MA, MD, FRCSC (74), of Upper Kingsburg, Nova Scotia, passed away quietly at home surrounded by family on September 14, 2023.
Denis was born on October 4, 1948 to Ernest and Ava Falvey (née Mosher) in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He had a passion for learning that he nurtured his whole life, in university and beyond. He studied Mathematics at St. Mary’s University, where he was awarded the Governor General’s Medal, the Gold Medal in Science, and graduated summa cum laude. He completed an MA in Functional Analysis in 1972 and an MD at Dalhousie University in 1977. He went on to specialize in Ophthalmology at Dalhousie, where he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada. He also worked on a PhD in Multidisciplinary Studies (Mathematics, Ophthalmology, Electrophysiology, and Computational Neuroscience), but was unable to finish due to deteriorating health.
Denis served in the Canadian Armed Forces on two different occasions, where he completed a Flight Surgeon diploma and held the position of Atlantic Fleet Surgeon. Later, as a civilian, he practiced ophthalmology in Amherst and Bridgewater, NS. After retiring from medical practice in 2017, he spent his free time woodworking, gardening, turning bowls, collecting stamps, studying math, writing, and working on electoral reform. He was a life-long student of many subjects who loved music, Upper Kingsburg, and his three cats, Gauss, Tom, and Joyce.
He is survived by his wife of fifty years (Ann Falvey, née Cunningham), his three daughters (Emily Falvey with Konstantinos Koutras, Arwen Falvey, and Conor Falvey with Josh Judah), three grandchildren (Aislinn Falvey, Augustus Koutras, and Catherine Koutras), and two siblings (Richard Falvey and Catherine Herzig with Steven Herzig).
He will be laid to rest at Lakeview Cemetery in Lower Kingsburg in a private event for immediate family members, followed by a memorial gathering at a future date to be determined. Any questions regarding the funeral arrangements can be directed to Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home in Lunenburg.
