Obituary for
Deborah «Deb» Durst
November 21, 1952 – August 5, 2023
On Saturday, August 5, after an afternoon surrounded by flowers, birds, sunshine, and a gentle breeze, Deborah Ann Durst passed away peacefully at Roozen Family Hospice Centre with her two children by her side.
Born in Salmon Arm, BC, Deb was raised in Vernon, BC with her two younger sisters, Janis Glenesk (Rob), and Sandy Mackay (Brian Johnston).
At an early age, Deb learned to snow ski and waterski and loved swimming. At the age of eight, Deb won a miniature Corvette that she proudly drove in the Vernon Winter Carnival Parade along with her younger sister Janis, who insisted on joining her as a passenger. Her father added some driving restrictions when he discovered it could go up to 35mph.
Silver Star Mountain and Kalamalka Lake in Vernon, BC were two of her favourite places that she continued to return home to throughout her life. She loved gardening, a passion she shared with her mother.
Deb was married to Werner Durst for 36 years and together in Medicine Hat and St. Albert, Alberta, they raised the two most important people in her life, Tyson and Shannon Durst.
Deb had a brilliant sense of humour that carried her through 13 years of dialysis. She was an avid fan of the Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Blue Jays and loved watching and following games and seasons in recent years.
She adored and cared for many animals throughout her life, in particular many wonderful cats. One of these furry companions was Sylvester, who was with her from 2008 – 2021 and always lifted her spirits and made her smile. In April 2023, she accompanied her son Tyson to the Edmonton Humane Society where he adopted a cat named Tux. Like Sylvester, Tux would routinely curl up and sleep at her side at bedtime.
Deb was a loving friend, sister, daughter, mother, aunt, and a brave soul full of light and strength.
The family would like to thank all the staff at West Edmonton Kidney Care, and all of the nurses and doctors who cared for her in her life.
The family will host a private Celebration of Life on September 1st, 2023.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pilgrims Hospice Society, The Kidney Foundation of Canada, as well as the Edmonton Humane Society.
