It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of David Smith of Fredericton, N.B., husband of his loving wife of 66 years, Betty (Elizabeth Jewett), on September 4, 2024 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital at the age of 87 years. Born on August 30, 1937 in Fredericton, N.B, he was the son of the late Hugh F. Smith and Catherine Larlee.
In addition to his wife, David is survived by his son Michael and his wife Suzanne; granddaughters Kalie Siemens (Pascal), Vernon, B.C. and Jennifer Smith of Ottawa, ON.; brothers-in-law Bryant Prosser, Don Prime, David Jewett, and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, David was also predeceased by two brothers, Wallace and Bill, and three sisters, Charlotte Prime, Geraldine Clements, and Marjorie Prosser.
David worked in various roles at N.B. Power’s Head Office for 36 plus years, and also spent a few years with the Corps of Commissionaires.
A volunteer at heart, Dave devoted many years of his life to the Royal Canadian Legion and the Salvation Army. He was recognized by the City of Fredericton with the Unsung Hero Award, and was also awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, the Palm Leaf, and Life Membership from the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 4 in Fredericton, for his devotion to many of its programs and committees, including the Men’s Choir, School Visitation, Sick and Visiting, Bingo, and various others.
Dave had a real passion for flowers, especially red ones, and ensured there were plenty of them around his beautiful life-long Victorian home. Every spring and summer, you could see him planting and tending to over 40 outdoor planters around his homestead on Union Street, and enjoying compliments of the many passerby.
Dave loved to interact with people and always had a good joke to share. An avid cribbage player, he also sang with a local Barbershop Chorus, enjoyed fishing, camping, spending time at the camp on the Nashwaak River, and driving in the countryside.
At David’s request, there will be no visitation. A graveside service will be held at Sunny Bank Cemetery on Thursday, September 12, 2024 at 11:00 a.m.
Chipman Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements, and online condolences may be left at www.chipmanfuneralhome.ca. Donations in David’s memory may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
