David Sisley Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of David Robert Sisley of Delia, AB on April 24, 2024, at the age of 82, after a courageous battle with cancer he passed away peacefully with his loving wife Carol by his side.
Dave was born on December 12, 1941, being raised in Calgary and living at what was the family grocery store and home on 34th Ave and Centre Street N. Dave graduated from Cresent Heights High School then attended SAIT Polytechnic, studying Radio Electronics.
Dave grew up with a love of sports, especially baseball. In 1961 he was drafted to the LA Dodgers training camp. Although he didn’t make the team, this was a dream come true. The Dodgers always remained his favourite team.
Dave returned to Calgary, where his hard work and dedication gave him a 41 year career in the printing trade, working his way up to management. Dave was the General Manager of University of Calgary Print Shop and Century Press. Then in 1993 he took the leap and bought a small print shop in Sicamous, BC. He was the proud owner of Hummingbird Press for 10 years, before retiring and moving back to the Calgary area (Strathmore) to be closer to family, but mostly the grandchildren. In 2009 Dave and Carol bought a “fixer upper house” in Delia where Dave spent 3 years to renovate his forever home. Carol retired in 2012 when they both became fulltime residents of Delia.
Dave took an active interest in the Village of Delia and started attending council meetings faithfully 2013. Dave was elected Mayor in 2017 and remained until 2023, when he was unable to do so due to his health. He also dedicated his time volunteering as president of Delia’s Community and Bloom, as director of Delia’s Ag Society which included being the Reservations Manager for the Delia Community Campground, and not to mention the numerous Elks bingo and pancake breakfasts.
Dave’s greatest joy was his family, especially his 6 grandchildren. He attended everything he was invited to, birthdays, tournaments, games and competitions. The special time we spent together for family holiday gatherings, vacations and the 5 years seasonal camping at the Handhills Hideaway were always a joy to him.
Our 7yrs of annual baseball game in Delia where friends and family, from 6 – 90 yrs of age played, laughed and enjoyed our time together regardless of how many players were on each team, or who played what position. Being together was all that mattered.
Dave leaves behind his wife Carol (Thompson) of almost 40 years. Their four children, Kenn (Deb) Sisley, Yvonne Sisley, Steven (Kristie) Bate, and Christa (DJ) Giles. And their six Grandchildren, Jenner (Angie) Giles, Lewis Giles, Connor (Mekya) Bate, Caroljean Bate, Tyler Doble and Jaxon Sisley. Sisters, Ellen and Margaret, nephew Jim (Janis) and niece Nadine (Alex). Aswell as numerous nieces and nephews.
Dave is predeceased by his parents Stan and Mary Sisley, in-laws Charlie and Shirley Thompson, brother-in-law Jim Hemsing, nephews Kevin Wilson, Terry Thompson and niece Angie Hemsing.
A celebration of life will be held on May 1, 2024 at 2:00pm at the Delia Community Hall, the family welcomes everyone to stay for a luncheon following the celebration.
