A Celebration of Life
David Ray Carruthers
Beloved husband of Sandra (Boyd) and father to Sara and James passed away peacefully June 20, 2023 at the Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital in Tatamagouche.
Born in 1949, he was the son of Ray and Margaret (Bell) Carruthers. He completed his early schooling in Tatamagouche before attending the Nova Scotia Agricultural College in Truro. He transferred to the University of Maine to complete his undergraduate degree and a Master’s degree in Biochemistry.
In 1975, he began working at the Department of Pharmacy at Dalhousie University in Halifax before going on to work for Dr. Gerry Johnston and Dr. Rick Singer in the “Yeast Lab”. Proud to be a “yeastie”, he was a vital part in the training of the many students who passed through the lab over 35+ years.
David loved singing, first discovering this passion in the Sharon United Church choir as a teenager. As Sandra’s career as a United Church Minister evolved, he would sing in more than a half dozen church choirs, grounding the harmony with his rich bass voice.
Sharing his skills with Sharon United was important to David. He chaired the Property Committee for several years where he oversaw the good order and maintenance of the building. He played a significant role in making the church’s IT systems function properly, especially during the pandemic.
David and Sandra retired to Tatamagouche in 2013 where they built a lovely home overlooking the scenic Waugh River. He was proud to return once again to the Sharon United Church choir in his retirement years.
The ups and downs (mostly downs) of the Toronto Blue Jays were a common topic of discussion most evenings in Sandra and David’s home, with David passing his love of the game on to both his children. When baseball season ended, David would switch his attention to curling, and he enjoyed attending the Brier in Ottawa in 2016.
When not reveling in the drama of sports, he could be found gardening, playing bridge, or putting his knowledge of biochemistry to good use by making his own wine. An excellent carpenter, he was ever willing to help someone with a carpentry project – when he wasn’t busy with his own home improvements.
David is survived by Sandra, his wife of nearly 50 years, his sister, Beth of Tatamagouche, his daughter, Sara Kelemen (Scott); son, James Carruthers (Rivi), and the grandchildren he loved dearly, Sebastien and Piper Kelemen and Rhys Carruthers. He is also survived by numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, and infant son, Matthew.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Adrienne Watson, Dr. Donald Rowe and the Oncology Department at Colchester East Hants Health Centre. Gratitude is also expressed to Martha Ferguson and Dr. Cortney Smith as well as the doctors, nurses and staff at Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital.
A service of celebration and remembrance will be held at Sharon United Church, Tatamagouche on Saturday, July 29th at 1pm with reception to follow in the church hall. Family interment will take place at the Bell Gift Cemetery, New Annan. For those unable to attend the service, it will be recorded and made available on the funeral home webpage. In lieu of flowers, the family would request donations be made in David’s memory to The Beatrice Hunter Cancer Research Institute or to Sharon United Church. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Coulter Funeral Home, Tatamagouche.
