PAYNE, DAVID OWEN January 26, 1952 – September 3, 2023
On the morning of Sept. 3, 2023, David Owen Payne died with his family at his side, at Humber River Hospital in a room facing north, looking toward home. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Catherine (née Smith), and darling daughters Alison (Michael) and Rebecca.
Born in Toronto on Jan. 26, 1952, to parents Peter and Delta Payne, he will be dearly missed by his sister, Elizabeth (David), his brothers-in-law, sister-in-law, and his nephew and three nieces.
He loved to watch old movies and listen to records. A jokester and a clown, his countless practical and inside jokes kept everyone laughing.
A lifelong athlete, at school Dave played football, goalie in hockey and lacrosse, and took long-distance cycling trips with his dear friends in the self-proclaimed Richmond Hill Cycle Club. He ran two marathons, with a best time of 4:02:53. In later years he stayed active with his ‘walks around the town.’ His love of swimming was unmatched. With NYAC, he and his teammates held an Ontario record for the 400 IM relay, and he competed at the Olympic trials.
He loved to swim in Southampton, where the tradition of family summer trips as a child was carried on with Cathy and the girls, staying at the Wiggle Inn, where the family was able to return together in 2020.
His time in Europe as a young man shaped who he was, and living on the Kibbutz Zikim aligned with his strong inclination for community and cooperation.
He was deeply moved by the plight of others, whether it be those afflicted in international news stories, or those in his own town. He wrote many letters to the editor over the years, as well as journals and poems. Charity was at the heart of his time with the Lodge of Fellowship #702. His polar bear and long-distance swims — ‘Dave’s Dips’ — raised money for those in need. He volunteered for years with the Town of Richmond Hill.
His affable nature and charm no doubt aided him in his career in sales. He developed long-term relationships with clients over the years, venturing across the province many times over. His dedication to health and safety was reflected in his time with Toronto West CAER Committee, which honoured him for 25 years of service.
David’s generous spirit, playful humour, and capacity for deep emotion have left an indelible mark on us all. We love you, dad.
Friends may call at MARSHALL FUNERAL HOME, 10366 Yonge Street, Richmond Hill, ON, on Saturday September 9th from 1 p.m. until the time of the funeral in the chapel at 2 p.m. Cremation
In lieu of flowers, the family asks those who are able to donate to the Alzheimer Society of York Region.
