On Monday, March 27, 2023, at 94 years old, Dave decided he’d finished all his work, and it was time to join his beloved Jane who had predeceased him 8 years earlier.
Born in Eatonia, Saskatchewan, Dave lived life with a spirit exemplified by a man blown out of a tank during the Korean War, only to shake it off and get on with things. He was a marvel, mowing lawns, planting flower gardens, shoveling snow, building furniture, and making delicious meals for his family on weekends, and generally accomplishing more by noon than those half his age do all day.
Dave’s generous spirit, sense of humour, kindness, and storytelling ability earned him many friends. In group settings, he would seek out those that seemed lonely or out of place and would ensure they were included, usually by gently teasing them and making them laugh. This generous spirit, however, was overtaken by his competitive spirit as he fully enjoyed “whoopin” the kids in games of bean bag toss and pool.
Defying stereotypes, his memory was sharp, often recalling minute details of his youth, usually involving hilarious stories of mischief and consequences. These stories were generally relayed during “Miller Time”, his daily ritual of having a couple of Bud Lights with friends and family, at precisely 4 pm every day. If Miller Time was especially enjoyable, you might find him doing a little song and dancing along with his favourite Hank Williams Sr. song.
One of his great joys was the handcrafted furniture business that he and partner/son-in-law started when he was 90. His memory will live on in his work through his mentorship of Gary.
Dave leaves a cast of heartbroken individuals with his passing, including his children, Lorne, Allen, Nancy, Susan (Jason), and Julie (Gary); his grandchildren, Mara, Terry, Kaye, Sam, and Isabelle; great-grandson Sawyer; his dear friend and Miller Time buddy, Todd; and his loyal canine companion, Roxie.
We’ll miss that old coot but know he is in his happy place, with Jane, in a celestial campground, laughing and joking with all his favourite camping buddies (we see you Nan) who got there before him.
In keeping with Dave’s wishes, we will be planning an outdoor Celebration of Life for family and friends when we can enjoy the weather.
