It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of David Griffin Cant on November 29 at the age of 82yrs. Left behind to mourn are his wife of almost 56 yrs, Patricia and his two son’s Richard Cant (Coralee) and Andrew Cant (Nicole) and grandchildren Hailey, Marcus, Graeme, Griffin, and Qwynn.
Dad was born in Chesterfield England 30th April 1940 into the loving arms of his parents Hilda and Griffin.I can recall stories from his youth he told me when he rolled a landcover and lost a friend who was fortunately under a seat or drag racing BSA Lightning motorcycles from light to light with no helmet or building homemade rockets.
Somehow he survived his younger years and at around 20 years of age he started into the trade in electrical winding as an apprentice as well as dabbling as an electrician. During this time he became an accomplished musician skilled on the guitar, piano/organ and Saxophone playing in a band before large crowds at the local fairs.
In true English fashion he met his future wife Patricia at a pub. Soon after they were married in 1966 and produced two wonderful children Richard and Andrew. In 1976 the family made a bold move and immigrated to Canada where dad started working at American Hoist in Toronto. A year later dad became an employee at General Electric in Calgary and decided to move in the middle of winter driving a Pontiac Parisienne dragging a UHaul heading West across the bleak Canadian Shield.
After spending 3 years in Calgary my dad followed GE to Kamloops and then moved to Mission BC.
Dave experienced a heart attack and subsequent quadruple heart bypass in 1991 and most devastating was a laryngectomy in 1992 resulting from laryngeal caner. He may have lost his voice but not his sense of humour which was still present into his last days all can attest that looked after him!
He and Patricia moved again from Mission back to Kamloops to be close to their first grandchildren. Dave and Pat always had a garden; mom with her flowers and dad was always tinkering and making gadgets.
Dad always had a joke to tell, had the ability to brighten any room, entertain on numerous musical instruments, fix anything and masterminded various mechanics contraptions.
Over the last 10-15 years dad’s health started to worsen resulting in many stays at Royal Inland Hospital. The respiratory therapists at RIH were always so important to his complex care. We would like to thanks the incredible caring team on 6N including Dr Ian Tynan who in his last hrs made him as comfortable as he has been is many years.
My father was an incredible human being and will be sorely missed. If you care to leave a donation please help support our food centres who help feed the less fortunate in our community.
