David Mercer Obituary
MERCER, David George
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of David George Mercer on June 10, 2024 at the age of 65. David was many things; an avid fisherman, a golfer, a father, a brother, an uncle, a son, but most importantly a beloved husband to his wife of 40 years, Fran.
He married his forever dancing partner, Fran Mercer, on June 16th, 1984. Together, they had two daughters, Erin and Katelyn. He taught them how to fish, to love nature, to tell jokes and above all, to be thankful. He took great pride in stocking his girls’ tackle boxes throughout the years.
David was also proud of his three little grandsons, Luke, Ben and Jack. He often talked about how he looked forward to watching them grow up. He took them out on their first boat ride, taught Luke how to cast and was there when he caught his first fish. He even threw a little Smallmouth Bass in Ben’s waiting pool; classic Dad.
If he wasn’t fishing or golfing on a Sunday morning, he was busy making the family breakfast. A toasted Western was his specialty.
He had a life-long love affair with lamb chops, steak, scalloped potatoes, blood pudding, Nonna’s Soppressata, “double” bacon, homemade popcorn with butter, old cheddar cheese and Ms Vicki’s salt and vinegar chips.
David loved ice fishing. He made his own tip ups and enjoyed taking his buddies and his girls out on the lake. He even had a special stick for the newbies. As much as the family loved to catch fish, it was the one-on-one time they went for, everyone did. There was never a dull moment between “Oh! There’s one down there” and “Did you ever hear the one about…”. Dave was the best storyteller and always the life of the party.
David worked hard at his business, Creative Finishes, until he retired at 63. His work ethic, honesty and professionalism built him a client base that was entirely from referrals and repeat customers. He was always busy and was booked long in advance. Most of the kids in the family helped him out at some point. He was a great mentor and he was meticulous and passionate about his craft.
During his retirement, he was most thankful to get in some good fishing and golfing trips with the boys, enjoyed a wonderful trip to the cottage last summer and spent quality time with his family during his last vacation down south at Christmas.
David will be dearly missed by Fran, Erin (Keith) and Katelyn (Rob) who can’t imagine their lives without this incredible man. He will be fondly remembered by his sister Amy (Brian), sister-in-law Sue and his nephews, Kyle, Jamie, Matt and the late Andrew. David was predeceased by parents Gil and Pat.
In memory of David, donations can be made to the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters. Online condolences are encouraged and can be expressed at www.millvalleyfuneral.com
