David Burpee Dow
1938-2023
David Burpee Dow passed away at his home, in Hartland, N.B.
on March 25th, 2023. David was born on December 23rd, 1938, and was
the son of the late Burpee and Jenny Dow. Besides his parents, he is
predeceased by his brothers Gene, Ronald, Peter, and Herbert;
brothers-in-law, Lee and Bob Carruthers; sisters-in-law, Caroline and
Sally Dow, as well as nephew Wayne.
David is survived by his loving wife Diane of 55 years,
Daughter Julie (Brian) Culberson, grandchildren David and Julianna;
Daughter Cheryl (Michael) Northway, grandchildren Garrett and Beckett;
and son Shane Dow (Erin Hill), grandchildren Nathan and Charlotte.
David is also survived by his brother, Leonard Dow, sisters-in-law
Necedah Fairegrieve, Marguerite Roberts, and Erma Dow, as well as
several nieces and nephews.
David was an active member of his community, known for
serving on town council for six years, prior to becoming the mayor of
Hartland for nine years. Forever a family man, David put his family
first and enjoyed every moment with his wife, daughters, son, and
grandchildren. You could always find David cheering on his
grandchildren at the rink and basketball court.
As a young man, he enjoyed playing and watching hockey,
hunting, and fishing with friends.
Prior to becoming a proud business owner in Hartland, he
worked as a mechanic and master tig welder, starting his trade while
travelling to the Yukon territories on his ’47 Harley
Davidson Knucklehead motorcycle at the age of 17. At the age of 79,
David repeated this long trek back to the Yukon with a dear friend
– a trip that lasted 20 days and was a priceless
journey!
David refused to retire and kept busy every spring and fall,
working for McCain’s and loving the interactions he had in
the fields with farmers and fellow truck drivers.
In his leisure time, he enjoyed going for motorcycle rides
with his wife, taking part in the annual Carleton County Toy Run, and
travelling extensively on his Harley with dear friends who shared his
mutual love of motorcycles.
His family would like to extend special thanks to all of his
friends who reached out and stopped in, community members who came
together to support David and our family during this difficult time,
his doctors at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital, the kind
extra mural nurses who cared for him, and Dr. Rudy
Stocek.
We will forever miss our husband, father, grandfather, and
dear friend, we know how much he meant to so many
people.
A public visitation will be held at the Britton Funeral Home,
2 High Street, Hartland on Tuesday, March 28th, 2023, from 6 to 8 p.m.
There will be a private graveside service held at a later date. If so
desired, donations can be made to the River Valley Cancer Support
Group. www.brittonfh.ca. 506-375-4343.
«He never looked for praises, he was never one to
boast.
He just went on quietly, working for the ones he
loved the most.
His dreams were seldom spoken, his wants
were very few,
and most of the time his worries were
unspoken too.
He was there, a firm foundation, through all
our storms in life,
a sturdy hand to hold onto, in times of
stress and strife.
A true friend we could turn to, when
times were good and bad,
One of our greatest blessings,
this man we called husband and dad.»
