Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that the family announces that Darry Gene Dargatz (born May 27, 1952) passed away unexpectedly on March 22, 2023 at the age of 70.
Darry is predeceased by his loving wife, Muriel Ann (Cardinal) Dargatz; parents, Stanley and Isla Dargatz as well as three siblings, Linda, Bonnie and Gordon. He is survived by his four sons, Darryl, Robin, Eugene, Corbin; four grandchildren, Shelby, Shaina, Darryanne, Dakota; four great-grandchildren, as well as his surviving siblings, Robert Alan, Patricia, John and Kenneth.
In his youth Darry grew up under a strict household where he learned strong family values and devotion. He always respected his parents and looked out for his younger brothers and sisters (with the odd “misunderstanding” of course). As a teenager he became fond of cars such as his Plymouth Roadrunner. Yet, he also began focusing on helping to support his family which meant dropping out of school at grade 10 and going to work full-time. From then on, work and his family defined the rest of his life as a man, husband and loving father.
At the young age of 15, Darry’s working career started on the oil rigs, forging the strong man that he was, even working his way up from the title of roughneck to running T.M. Transit Well Services Grande Prairie division. By the late 80’s he got away from the rigs and built a family business Woodland Oil Field Services based out of his home in Wembley, where he and his kin operated Steamers and did Industrial Sandblasting and Painting. In the late 90’s Darry realized how much his passion for cars and trucks was beginning to look like a junkyard collection (credit to the four boys for adding to it). So he began salvaging scrap metal in Beaverlodge. From there on out he continued with metal recycling, right up until the day of his passing.
Besides work, Darry can always be considered a family man at heart. In 1971, Darry married his beautiful wife Muriel Cardinal in Didsbury, Alberta. Throughout their time together, they both enjoyed travelling, camping, skiing, date nights and parties. During the years that followed, Darry & Muriel managed to raise his family of four boys and numerous beloved pets. It should be noted that out of love and support Darry & Muriel were generous and offered their roof and hospitality to all of their kin, on both sides of the family. Further on the notion of family, Darry made genuine connections that should be worth mentioning, including the tight bond he shared with his brother Robert, and his brother-in-law Alex who looked up to him as his big brother.
Darry often went hunting with his wife and always had the boys with them, even having numerous family members, coworkers and friends join them. Not only for the provisions the hunt brought, but also for the experience and time spent together with loved ones. As Muriel’s health declined, Darry never let his love for her die and cared for her until her passing in 2014. Shortly thereafter, he packed up and moved south from Beaverlodge to his old stomping grounds in Central Alberta where he was always happy to be able to spend more time with his siblings, sons and grandchildren until the end of his days.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, April 1, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at Baker Funeral Chapel, with a visitation from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. Please note Darry would like to ensure you all to wear whatever you feel comfortable in!
