62 Years
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Darrell Brent Baker, age 62, on August 8, 2024.
Darrell was born on May 30, 1962, in Brandon, Manitoba to Ella and Lloyd Baker. Born into a military family, Darrell’s childhood was spent in Montreal, Quebec and Surrey, British Columbia.
Darrell’s musical talent was discovered at 8 years old, when Ella realized Darrell could play almost any song she gave him on his guitar. Darrell sang a beautiful tenor, and his older brother, Gary, could sing baritone. At 8 and 10 years old, this musical duo became known as the ‘Baker Boys’, performing in churches in Surrey and Vancouver for 5 years.
Darrell took on his first job at 11 years old as a paper boy, delivering newspapers with Gary to houses along the coast. It was there, in Surrey, where Darrell developed his love for plants, the mountains, and nature as a whole.
After graduating high school, Darrell received his Bachelor of Business Administration from Trinity Western College in 1985, and his Bachelor of Theology at Central Pentecostal College in 1993. Following his education, Darrell worked as the manager of the Jubilee Center in Waldheim, where he befriended many of his senior residents and provided tender care for all. After serving at the Jubilee Center, Darrell pursued his passion for landscaping as a career.
Darrell’s talent for landscaping was undeniable. His work has often been described as a form of art, with his ability to work with many different styles and his natural eye for incorporating the right colors and textures. Darrell befriended many of his clients and took care of their yards as if they were his own. Landscaping was not only work, but one of Darrell’s favorite hobbies. At home, Darrell tended to his own yard, developing it over the course of 20 years into the oasis it is today.
More than anything, we will miss Darrell for the person he was. Darrell was a one-of-a-kind man. His kind presence and his willingness to give will not be forgotten. He extended a listening ear and a shoulder to anyone who needed. He was easy to befriend, and he was loved by so many.
Darrell is survived by his daughters, Mari Baker and Hannah Baker; mother Ella Baker; brother Gary Baker; aunt Norma Burron; and many cousins. After a life full of love and adventure, the Lord brought Darrell home to rest peacefully and eternally.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the community for their support during this hard time. Darrell will be deeply missed.
