Obituary
Daniel John Fry, 69, of Clyde River, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends at Roseway Hospital in Shelburne on Sunday, September 3, 2023, after a long battle with lung cancer.
Born November 24, 1953, and raised in Halifax, he was the second youngest of six children born to John and Mona Fry. He was educated at St. Patrick’s High School in Halifax and later attended Saint Mary’s University, where he studied classical history.
Dan had an adventurous early career that carried him to Rivers Inlet in British Columbia, where he ran a salmon fishing resort; to Florida where he lived on and repaired boats of all kinds; and to Switzerland, where he hiked and climbed mountains and fed his love of Europe. When he eventually returned to Nova Scotia after wandering through most of North America in his VW camper with his first Great Pyrenees dog, he opened a boat shop in Hubbards and later in Mahone Bay. He then taught himself how to make cedar strip canoes, a craft he taught on two First Nations Reserves in Nova Scotia. He was an artist as much as a builder, and his canoes went all over the world and are hopefully still being enjoyed by their owners today. He first discovered Shelburne County when he received a tip about the best place to find wood for his canoes, which was the Scots’ lumber mill in Barrington. He quickly fell in love with the area and decided to stay.
Dan loved the water and sailing and was never far from either from a very early age. His love of and interest in all things related to sailing was fed in large part by his childhood mentor, Frank Harley, who drew out and nurtured his adventurous nature.
His greatest weakness after sailing was European sports cars. He owned many in his earlier years, and just months before his death he realized his dream of owning a 1997 Porsche Boxster.
Dan had great compassion for all living creatures and concern for environmental issues. Impossible was a word he refused to believe in. He was patient, kind, wise, non-judgmental, and so very gentle. He never complained, even though he knew much suffering. He always found ways of turning his own troubles into something positive. Early health issues led him to devote over 30 years of his life to participation in a research study with the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. He knew this research would never benefit him directly, but he was satisfied knowing it would help others. Dan found new friends everywhere he went. He believed in his community, wherever that was throughout his life. On hearing of his passing, a friend remarked, “He was one of the kindest men I have ever known.”
After meeting and eventually marrying Rhonda, the love of his life and true soul mate, he moved to Rhonda’s home in Clyde River. He devoted himself to helping her realize her dreams of renovating her childhood home. However, it was his greatest joy to have been a caring support for Rhonda’s late mother Doris, and the two had many adventures together.
Dan is survived by his wife, Rhonda Tufts, sisters Patricia, Penny (Bob Doherty), Marilyn, and Deborah (James MacDonald), brother Christopher (Rhonda Fry), as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 9th, at 2:00 pm from the H.M. Huskilson’s Memorial Chapel, Barrington with a reception to follow. Pastor Cindy Dunnett officiating. The service will be livestreamed for all those unable to attend. Memorial donations in his memory may be made to any charity of choice.
