Daniel Henry McConnell Obituary
Daniel Henry McConnell, Sr., at the age of 90, husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, affectionately referred to as ‘Poppy,’ passed away Wednesday, April 3rd, 2024, at Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital in Stephenville, Newfoundland.
Daniel was born on August 28, 1933, in Toledo, Ohio, USA, to parents, Isley and John McConnell. He grew up spending a large portion of his formative years with his beloved grandfather, Henry Pharis Fryman, born August 27, 1881. In 1951, at the age of 18, Daniel joined the US Air Force. He later requested compassionate leave to be with his dying grandfather who had cared for him and who he had cared for and assisted in his teenage years, when his grandfather was wheelchair bound. Following his grandfather’s death Daniel was stationed at Ernest Harmon Air Force Base in Stephenville, Newfoundland where he met the love of his life, Joyce Laing. They married on October 6, 1954. Daniel was honorably discharged in 1954 as a disabled veteran after losing his left hand while on duty (just twenty days after he and Joyce were married). He continued to work on the base at the Base Supply until the Base’s closure in 1966.
Daniel and Joyce opted to raise their family of seven children, Daniel Jr., Dahlia, Dorinda, Daphne, Dwayne, Dawna and Donald in Stephenville, Newfoundland. Daniel supported his family through the years in multiple ways. His wife, Joyce, died in 2013.
Daniel was known for being an avid sportsman, enjoying handball and squash at the local gym. He was an excellent swimmer and was once referred to as being a whale as the water spouted high from his snorkel. He also enjoyed family games of baseball, as well as board and table games. He was often viewed enjoying a strategic game of chess. He was an avid reader and loved gospel music. He was a self-taught baritone player. He stayed young at heart through constant self-instruction to increase his knowledge and understanding, exemplified by his taking a library offered computer course at the age of 82. A favorite hobby was spending time on his CB or Ham radio. His handle, ‘the Outdoorsman,’ depicted his love of fishing, hunting and camping. His skill as an amateur photographer was enjoyed by him and his family throughout his lifetime. He was optimistic, kind, caring, and loving, always willing to give or receive a good hug. He was always appreciative of kindnesses shown towards him, responding with heartfelt thanks and appreciation. He was detail oriented and enjoyed sharing his experience and knowledge in practical ways.
In 2016 Daniel was invited to be part of the 50th Anniversary celebrations of the Ernest Harmon Air Force Base closing in 1966. He and Joyce’s meeting and wedding were highlighted, and his life was documented by students at the College of the North Atlantic.
His faith was centered on the God of the Bible and the work of Jesus on the Cross. He attended Bible College for a year, and has been an attendee of the Zion Pentecostal Church in Stephenville, Newfoundland since the 1950’s.
Daniel died surrounded by his loving family. He will be greatly missed and remembered by all his family and friends.
He leaves to mourn with many loving memories: children: Daniel Jr. (Leila) McConnell, Dahlia (Rick) Gagnon, Dorinda (Dean) Shaw, Daphne McConnell (Ivan Kerfont), Dwayne (Verna) McConnell, Dawna (Ron) Barry, Donald (Janine) McConnell; sister Frances; sister-in-law Bonnie; 25 grandchildren; and 48 great grandchildren; as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
