With the heaviest hearts and the deepest gratitude for years of precious memories, we share the peaceful passing of our dear Dan Messner, who died at home October 12, 2024, surrounded by his family. Loving husband, wonderful father, precious grandfather, son, brother, uncle and friend.
Dan leaves behind those who will honour his values of kindness and caring, fun and adventure, and his appreciation of family: spouse Kathleen, children, Jeremy (Heather), Stéphanie (Michel), Nicolas (Kristine); his amazing grandchildren that he loved so much, Henry, Madeline, Andrew, Rielle and Téo; siblings Teresa, Mike, Eileen, John, Rebecca; father-in-law Henri Labossière, godchildren Michael and Janique, life-long best friend Rick Benoit, and countless other family and friends. Dan was predeceased by his parents Andy and Gisele, siblings Gary and Debbie, niece Dawn-Marie, mother-in-law Angele and brother-in-law Pierre.
Dan was an independent, quiet child who developed a strong work ethic and had many adventures in a large and extended family throughout his early years. As a young man, his passion for family and hockey brought him to Somerset where he met his sweetheart Kathleen. Shortly after their wedding and hearts coming together in 1981, they moved to Somerset and Dan enjoyed seven years working on the farm, playing hockey and curling, and becoming a father to Jeremy and Stéphanie. In 1989, they moved to Lorette, and welcomed Nicolas the following year, and it is here that Dan developed another strong sense of community through sports, church and his children’s activities and school. Dan was well respected in his field and after many years as a manager at CAA Manitoba, he enjoyed six happy years of retirement.
Over the years Dan treasured family, cottage life, motorcycle trips, curling and traveling extensively and had so much fun with a wide circle of friends. Dan’s skills as a handyman were impeccable and everyone knew to bring it to Dan for a fix. He treasured his collection of varied interests, hobbies and crafts, which benefitted many.
His gentle and caring approach created deep bonds with each of his children and grandchildren, who could count on him to play farm on the living room carpet, show up at any of their sports games and music concerts, teach them chess or a new game of cards and outrun them in a game of mini sticks or street hockey. He will be deeply missed.
A Celebration of Life and Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, October 21, 2024 at 2:00pm at Notre Dame de Lorette Parish, 1282 Dawson Road in Lorette, Manitoba. Refreshments will follow at the Parish Hall.
