Obituary
Dagmar Rydlo, an incredibly dynamic lady who inspired people to love music and be active outdoors, passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 25, 2024. Only a few weeks from turning 92, she leaves behind a legacy etched in elegance, love and positivity.
Dagmar was born on May 18, 1932 in the small town of Rakovnik, near Prague, in the Czech Republic. She was born into a wealthy family, owners of the Mydlo Otta (Otta Soapworks) which became the largest firm of its kind in the country by the time World War II started. While the family lived tenuously during the Nazi occupation, it was the growth of communism after the war that ultimately set the stage for the rest of Dagmar’s life. In 1948 the family firm was taken away from them overnight by the rising communist movement and all family members became ‘persona non grata’ everywhere they went, including Dagmar.
At sixteen, Dagmar, turned to her love of music as a way of carving a future for herself. Inspired by her father, who himself was a concert violinist and a business leader in the country, she was fortunate to find mentors who helped her develop her musical talent. She eventually graduated with a music degree from the Prague State Conservatory of Music and became the Vice-Principal at the State School of Art-Music.
While her musical career developed, communism kept on throwing challenges her way. Her sister escaped to the West with her husband while her brother was imprisoned for trying to escape from the oppressive communist system. She bravely kept supporting the family throughout, finding solace and rejuvenating energy in ski trips to the Tatras and kayaking trips down the many iconic rivers in Czechoslovakia.
When she met her future husband Vladimir Rydlo in 1967, she was inspired to take a fresh look at her future. While on their honeymoon in Yugoslavia, they decided to immigrate to Canada when the Soviet Union invaded their homeland in 1968, crushing the Prague Spring freedom movement that had just begun flourishing.
With just the belongings in their backpacks, they arrived in Montreal, greeted by her sister and brother who had immigrated to Canada earlier. Together with her husband she immersed herself into the Canadian culture, not only learning the language but also earning her Bachelor of Music from McGill University. She quickly established herself as an accomplished accompanist, piano teacher and adjudicator at musical festivals.
The birth of her son, Martin, in 1970 certainly rekindled her love for nature. Every weekend they would venture to the lakes and forests surrounding Montreal. Ultimately the family bought a remote cabin on Lac Gagnon, accessible only by boat and free of electricity. It became one of her happiest places she fondly remembered regularly.
In 1983 the family moved to Oakville, Ontario. She quickly established herself as an accomplished piano teacher and musical administrator with the Royal Conservatory of Music. She held frequent student concerts and lead the opening of the Mississauga and Oakville branches for the Royal Conservatory of Music. She loved to support the community, organizing concerts and music appreciation events for the University Women’s Club, Rotary Clubs, Senior Homes, Mayor’s Gala Evenings and Citizenship Awards.
Upon her retirement, she remained active at church and in the musical community as a senior music examiner for the Royal Conservatory of Music, travelling around the country ensuring future generations of pianists strive for the highest standards. She also was an advisor to Canadian Opera Company as well as opera companies around the continent, helping them prepare to perform Czech operas. In addition, she and her husband kept a worldly travelling agenda, seeking inspiration from the arts and nature wherever they went.
The crumbling of the Berlin Wall in 1989 gave Dagmar the chance to go back to her homeland. The Czech Velvet Revolution rekindled hopes of getting compensated for the factory and properties the communists stole in 1948. Along with other family members, she emersed herself into the political mayhem of the time, becoming a leading figure in the fight to fairly compensate those who had so much taken away from them by the Russian-lead regime. In the end, Procter & Gamble ended up buying the family soap factory without any compensation despite going to the Czech and European courts. But she was successful in getting several properties returned, giving her a chance to rekindle part of her youth. She was also treated to an honorary tour of the family’s former factory by Procter & Gamble with her son and granddaughter.
Dagmar will be remembered for her music appreciation classes, her endless walks in Bronte and Collingwood with her walking poles to her very last days, the joy she got from swimming anywhere she could, her never ending passion for music including her support of the growing Collingwood Music Festival, and her endless positivity.
Dagmar is survived by her loving family and countless friends, who will carry her memory as a lady who loved music, being active outdoors and inspiring positivity in others.
A service will be held for Dagmar Rydlo on Friday, May 31, starting at 3:00 PM, at St. Andrew’s Church in Oakville, 47 Reynolds St. This will be followed by a Celebration of Life at Paletta Mansion, 4250 Lakeshore Rd, Burlington, starting at 4:30 and continuing until 7:30. We will be serving good food and drinks. Czech music will of course be performed at both locations.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Collingwood Music Festival in Dagmar Rydlo’s name. Funds will go towards a new youth fund to help encourage young musicians under the direction of Daniel Vnukowski.
