Curtis Freeman Conrad
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Curtis Freeman Conrad (December 14, 1949 – February 7, 2023). Born in Dartmouth, NS, Curtis was the son of the late Lawrence Leslie Conrad and Jean Elizabeth (Bergman) Conrad. He is survived by his wife of over 30 years, Mary Anne (Bennett) Conrad, two brothers, Laurie and Mark (Brenda), as well as his two sons, Lawrence (Tanya) and Adam (Melissa), and daughter Faye Edwards (John). Curtis had an extensive family including 10 grandchildren: Bryce, Gavin, Lacey, Kadin, Athena, Alexandra, Lainey, Hailey, Paisley and Cole.
Curtis started off his career as a military army reservist with the Princess Louise Fusiliers (PLF) where he served in a part time capacity for four years and achieved the rank of corporal. Shortly after service he took a job as a porter at the Victoria General Hospital where he met his first wife, Lorraine Crewe, who he remained close friends after being married for 20 years. During this early time he joined the painting department of the VGH where he stayed employed for 38 years, receiving a Long Service Award from the provincial government.
Curtis loved spending time painting outdoor scenery and playing his guitar. He painted many canvasses and wrote numerous songs. He stayed true to his passions up until his passing, even recording a CD with four songs originally played by Elvis, who was his musical idol.
Curtis, aka “Crazy Curtis,” was also an avid prankster and you either loved that part of him or avoided any dark hallways or areas you were likely to become his victim in. He had an infectious smile and a hearty laugh. Even more so when he told you a joke or scared the life out of you in one of his many ways.
Curtis will be greatly missed by so many. In addition to his immediate family, he is also known as “Uncle Curtis” to over 20 nieces and nephews, who all adored him.
His family would like to send an extra thank you to the staff of the Whitehills Long Term Care facility in Pockwock. They took outstanding care of him over these many years and helped greatly to see him off properly.
A service will be held by the family 11 am, Monday, February 13 in the Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home, 13549 Peggy’s Cove Road, Upper Tantallon. Burial will follow in William Black Memorial Cemetery, Glen Margaret. Donations in memory of “Crazy Curt” can be made directly to the staff of Whitehills, so they may continue the selfless service to those under their care.
