Cornelis A. van der Meij, aged 81, passed away peacefully on September 19, 2024, at West Coast General Hospital in Port Alberni, BC, Canada after a short battle with cancer. Born on April 30, 1943, Cornelis was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Cornelis was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 41 years, Hilda, and his great-granddaughter Ophelia. He leaves behind his loving children Brenda, Vincent (Angie), and Barry (Annie); grandchildren Derek (Mikaela), Chelsey (Andrew), Summer, Spencer, Cameron, Gavin, Keaton, Ava; and great-grandchildren Paige, Aidan and Alex. His presence and guidance will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A veteran of the Royal Netherlands Navy, Cornelis served as a loyal mechanic for six years. Cornelis continued in mechanics and was described as hardworking and reliable. In 1980 Cornelis and his family made a life change and immigrated to Canada settling in Port Alberni. He dedicated many years to working at the APD mill until his retirement in 2007.
Cornelis was a man of many interests and talents. He was known for his green thumb, growing vegetables and smoking salmon, which he loved to share with family and friends. A tinkerer at heart, he could often be found in his workshop, working on a new project. His early years were marked by a keen participation in soccer, and he remained a lifelong fan, especially of European matches. Cornelis cherished the time spent with family and friends and enjoyed many years of camaraderie with his coffee group at the Harbour Quay.
A celebration of life will be held at a future date to honor Cornelis’s legacy and the profound impact he had on those around him. Cornelis showed a particular passion for supporting the Alberni Hospice Society, Ty Watson House, Canadian Cancer Society, and the West Coast General Hospital Foundation. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the above named organizations.
