Colleen June Oakey was born in Revelstoke BC, June 14, 1933, and spent her childhood and youth in the small communities of Beaton and Camborne in the Kootenays. She later moved to Vancouver, along with her mother and twin sister, to complete high school at Saint Patrick’s Secondary. Following high school, Colleen enrolled in what was then called Normal School where she first completed her teaching program, and later, after a few years of teaching at Hall’s Prairie Elementary, she returned and received her RN designation upon completion of the Nursing program. Decades later, in mid career, she attended the University of British Columbia and obtained her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. Her nursing career spanned over 4 decades where she worked in many wards and served in the role of Head Nurse for many years at Mount Saint Josephs. Alongside her devoted career as a nurse, she was a much-loved Auntie to many nieces and nephews and eventually great nieces and nephews. She was always supportive and thoughtful and attended any family dinner or event. She will remain known as the Auntie with a great appetite and love for food and family. Her formative years spent in a mountain community instilled in her a lifelong love and quest of the outdoors, and mountains in particular. She was a skilled skier and hiker well into her advanced years. Colleen worked hard, but she also took time to explore the world. She was an avid traveller and had visited most places in the world. In her quiet moments she was a woman of deep faith. As a devout Catholic she lived her life in a true expression of her faith. Colleen supported many different charities. She personally sponsored many children in several countries through various organizations. Colleen, along with her two sisters Cathleen and Dorothy, remained deeply close, together the 3 sisters were a force of love and selfless giving during their long lives. They supported each other during many difficult times and celebrated many joys together. She is predeceased by her loving Father (Bert), Mother (May), Brother (George), Eldest Sister (Dorothea), her two nephews Raymond and Gerald Oakey, and her beloved twin Sister Cathleen. She is survived by three generations of nieces and nephews: the first generation of eight – George (Barbara), Mary (Wilfred), Shane (Sunny), Bill (Tracy), Tara, James (Suzanne), Tim (Jennifer), and Susanne (Michael), and her long-time Brother-in-law Kenneth Sanders. Her zest for life, her devotion to her faith, and her love of the outdoors will live on in all of us. Funeral Mass at Good Shepherd Church – January 30th, 2023, at 11:00 a.m.
