It’s with heavy hearts that the family of Colin James “Colie” Matheson, age 54 announce his passing from a lengthy battle with cancer in Glace Bay on May 3rd, 2023 with his family by his side.
Colie is survived by his daughter Lea and two beautiful grand babies Lennyn and Rory.
Colie was always the fun uncle but nothing prepared him for the overwhelming love and pride for his baby girl and his two little munchkins. They were the joy of his life and the smile on his face could light up a room whenever they were around. He was a loving and doting dad and poppy.
Colie is also survived by his sisters, Gina (Gary) Wadden, Reserve Mines, Colleen Matheson, Sydney, Gail (David) MacKenzie, Fredericton, NB and Sharon Matheson, Glace Bay.
He will be dearly missed by his nieces, Sonya Hughes and Courtney Rideout as well as nephews, Brennan Matheson, Mitchell MacKenzie, Michael Matheson and Kenzie Servatiak and his many extended relatives and close friends especially his two lifelong “brothers, “Kenny “Boo” Gaigneur and Jimmy Newell who I am sure have many edited stories they could tell.
Colie is predeceased by his parents Colin and Veronica “Bae” (MacLeod) Matheson.
Colie was born in Glace Bay on June 30th, 1968. The only son and youngest of five. He completed our family and as the baby he gave us much joy and entertainment with his shenanigans. As he grew up he enjoyed hunting, fishing, rides on his bikes and anything that took him to spend time outdoors. It was there he was most happy and at peace.
Colie loved to travel and worked at various jobs that allowed him to do just that. From Cape Breton to Alberta and in the Arctic, Colie made many friends and had a lot of stories to tell about people he met along the way. Colie was a reliable hard working man who took great pride in making sure his job was done right. His work ethic and attention to detail were admired and greatly respected.
Colie’s passing has left an immeasurable hole in our hearts. He was so much more than these words can convey. He was kind hearted, affectionate, and loved deeply and with his whole heart.
A special thank you to the doctors and staff of the CB Cancer Centre and palliative care unit, especially Dr. Saliba who did everything possible to make his life a little longer, to palliative care and VON to ensure his wishes to be home were made possible and to Dr. Gallivan for being a compassionate doctor throughout his life.
Please consider making a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society or palliative care.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 7th, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay.
A celebration of Colie’s life will take place on Monday at 2 pm in the Funeral Home Chapel followed by burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Chaplain Lilly MacDonald presiding.
Following the burial all are invited back to the funeral home for a reception.
The link for the online streaming will be posted on the funeral home website shortly.
