CLYDE CAMPBELL KITTERINGHAM 1941-2023
With heavy hearts, we bid farewell to our cherished husband, brother, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, Clyde Kitteringham, who passed away on Friday, July 21, 2023 at the age of 81 in Milton, Ontario after a prolonged illness.
Clyde is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Magda, and his children Michele (Ron), Craig (Lisa) and Kimberley (Michael). He was a loving granddad to Justine, Devyn, Jared, Jack, Ross and Emerson. His memory will also be cherished by his sisters Patricia (Stan) and Bonnie and his brothers Jack (Marilyn) and Don (Jana). Clyde leaves behind special nieces and nephews and their families Sandy, Rick, Sheri, Tara, Michael, Aaron, Ashley, Brianne, Matt, Heather, Jonathan, Jeff, Colin, Erica, and Danielle.
Born on November 8, 1941, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Clyde was the eldest of five children born to Thomas Clyde (Clyde) and Jean Mckenzie Kitteringham (née Campbell). At the tender age of four, he was reunited with his father, who returned home after serving in Europe.
Clyde’s life journey took him through various adventures. He lived in an unheated granary near Alonsa, Manitoba, when his father briefly tried farming after the war. Clyde recalled visiting nearby family at night during this time, sitting on sacks of grain in the back of a wagon and being terrified at the howling of wolves along their route. In the fall of 1951, when Clyde was 9 years old, they moved to Creighton, Saskatchewan, where his father pursued mining work and later recruiting.
Clyde embarked on a fulfilling career in the RCMP and completed his training in Regina, Saskatchewan, in 1962. In 1964 he met his future wife, Magda Boh in Lethbridge, Alberta, and together they raised three children and built two homes from scratch. Clyde dedicated 25 years of police service in Alberta before being reassigned to St. John’s, Newfoundland. In 1987, Clyde was transferred to the Toronto-area. His remarkable career highlights included overseeing security for significant events such as the 1984 papal visit to Newfoundland, Margaret Thatcher’s 1993 visit to Toronto, and for the Organization of American States summit in Windsor, Ontario in 2000. He also oversaw the opening of a new RCMP headquarters in Milton, Ontario in 1993. Clyde retired from the RCMP in 2001 as a Superintendent, leaving a legacy by subsequently advocating for the end of the force’s mandatory retirement age.
Beyond his professional achievements, Clyde was a gifted athlete and fierce competitor with a passion for hockey and baseball. He shared his knowledge and love for sports by coaching youth teams in the communities he served. Clyde’s thirst for knowledge led him to pursue higher education while working full-time, eventually earning a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Toronto in 1991. In retirement, his passions included hockey, the study of World War II, finance, gardening, home improvements and most importantly, doting on his grandchildren.
An avid traveler, Clyde delighted in exploring North America and beyond, especially when accompanied by his beloved family. Their vacations to Disneyland, Montana, Marguerite Island (Venezuela), Barbados, Cornwall and Wales, Spain, Hawaii and Florida hold cherished memories.
Clyde strongly believed we all have the moral responsibility to take action and not turn a blind eye to injustice or suffering as reflected in one of his favourite quotes: “Never, never be afraid to do what’s right, especially if the well being of a person or animal is at stake. Society’s punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our soul when we look the other way.” Martin Luther King Jr.
Clyde was a private person who loved his family deeply. He was preceded in death by his parents Clyde and Jean Kitteringham, father/mother in-laws Ivan and Antonia Boh, sister-in-law Marija Boh, nephew Jonathan Boh and his cherished fur baby Sheena.
There are considerable strains on Canada’s healthcare system – especially as it relates to geriatric care. Clyde’s family extends heartfelt gratitude to Dr. V. Khan (Oakville), Juravinski Cancer Centre, Oakville Trafalgar and Milton Hospitals, for their dedicated care over the past year and a half. Their efforts have been commendable, especially considering the circumstances, highlighting the exceptional work of these medical professionals. Additionally, special thanks to the compassionate staff from Acclaim Heath for providing unwavering support.
In this time of sorrow, the family would like to express their gratitude to friends, neighbours and extended family for their overwhelming support.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please consider supporting the Canadian Cancer Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
