Clinton Frederick Cogswell
1931-2024
Clinton Frederick
Cogswell, son of Frederick «Fred» Newcombe Borden Cogswell
and Annie Louise (Morine) Cogswell, passed away on September 14, 2024.
He was born and lived in Port Williams all of his life. He was a
beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather
and friend.
Clinton is survived by
his wife Maryann (Stirling); his sister, Melba Murphy; his children;
Clinton John (Pam), Esther, Marjorie, Andria; his daughter-in-law,
Kim; his grandchildren, Owen and Evan Cogswell, Michael Colter, John
and Scott Cogswell, Nicolas, Lilla, Julia, Benjamin (Alyssa), Jennie
Mae and Christian (Laura) Roy; and his great grandchildren, Lucy, Dana
and Madelyn Roy.
He was predeceased by
his son, Robert «Bob» Cogswell.
Clinton grew up on the
family farm and worked with his father. After one year at Agricultural
College in Truro, where he also enjoyed playing hockey, he came home
to farm. When his father retired, he worked with and later joined a
partnership with his father’s cousin Henry Cogswell who
worked the adjacent farm. Together they expanded «Uncle»
Henry’s registered Holstein dairy herd. He then worked with
and passed the reins to his son, Bob.
He worked every day
and only took time out to support his family in their activities. The
only vacation anyone remembers was an Orchard Tour to Ontario in the
1960’s. His greatest lament in his last years was not being able to
help his family or help on the farm. However, he helped a lot as he
happily drove his lawnmower tractor and mowed family and farm lawns as
often as he could, which he did until his last week.
He
loved his horse and rode to school every day. His horse, Babe, came
when he whistled, and he taught her to count. He loved his dogs. In
his last days, his biggest concern was that his dog, Patsy, would be
cared for.
As a young lad he was
a 4-H member and encouraged his children to join 4-H. He was very
supportive of his children and others from the community in their
participation in the dairy project. He loved music and supported the
music endeavours of his children. He sang in a quartet in high school
and later was only heard singing in church. You could hear him whistle
around the farm, and with the radio in the morning as he made an early
breakfast. He was kind and patient. Children and animals were drawn to
him. His grandchildren loved to go with Grampy in the truck and to do
chores at the barn.
In his community, he was
one of the first members of the Port Williams Fire Department and
received recognition for his years of service. He was a member of the
Wellington Dyke, Bishop-Beckwith and Belcher Street Marsh Bodies and
Chipman Corner Cemetery Committee. He also received awards for his
dairy herd, milk production, and poultry production.
His gentle kindness,
wit and dry humor will be greatly missed.
Cremation has taken
place. The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday,
September 28, 2024 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville.
Interment will take place in the Chipman Cemetery, Chipman’s
Corner. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family
