Claudette Marie Vivianne Hart Obituary
Claudette Hart
November 26, 1941 – October 18, 2024
We celebrate the colorful, vibrant life of Claudette Hart. She had a short and rapid decline and was able to die as she wished in her home, cared for by her daughters, Michelle and Julie and her son, Pierre. She is also survived by her grand children Jacob, Benjamin, and Olivia and her great-grand children Kaleb, Sawyer and Michael— all of whom have many joyful, love-filled memories of their faerie-like, mirthful ‘Mama.’
Claudette or Clo loved being a Mom and prayed for snow days in Toronto so she could take her kids tobogganing on school days. She encouraged artistic expression and to this day, kept some of Julie’s and Pierre’s earliest artistic creations! She made a lot of our clothes—wild fun 70s designs, silk screened fabric and made us cool T-shirts and taught Michelle to sew her own clothes.
When we were in our teens, she eventually went back to school and became a linguist, specializing in English as a second language. She went on to teach at the University of Pennsylvania, creating special materials that addressed the challenges of learning English from each foreign country’s perspective.
When she moved back to Canada, she resumed her artistic pursuits and started with making jewelry and watercolors. When she moved to Merrickville she found her home and her artistic talents exploded. She dove into pottery, then moved into gourds and became known as the Gourd Lady of Merrickville, appearing on a few TV shows explaining the not so known art of gourds.
Her love of art making meandered in multiple directions, circling back to old faves and then exploring new territory. She was passionate about learning new mediums and combining new techniques with her old faves. She went back to watercolors and gourds and pottery throughout the years and explored fibre arts, steam punk, alcohol inks, polymer clay and beyond!
She was an unstoppable artistic force in her beloved Merrickville artist community. She encouraged artists who needed it and inspired others to expand their limits. She adored Merrickville and the village adored her back.
She will be greatly missed by her Merrickville community, her family and friends. There is a Celebration of Life, Monday, October 28, 2024, beginning at 1:00pm at the Legion in Merrickville. Her family will gather for a wonderful picnic in Kananaskis in the summer and sprinkle her ashes in the Bow River per her wishes. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Lannin Funeral Home.
