Claude Pettit Obituary
Passed away peacefully at Brightshores Health System – Owen Sound on Friday, November 1, 2024. Born in Sarnia on March 26, 1930, Claude Elton Hartley Pettit of Owen Sound, was in his 95th year.
Beloved husband for 69 years of Anna Pettit (nee Eby) of Owen Sound. Loving father of Jim, Dale (Kimberley), Joel (Siew), Colin (Sandy), Justin (Krista), and Ben (Carita). Cherished grandpa of Jocelyn, Trevor, Maddie, Finn, Aiden, Teddy and Audrey. Dear brother of Derek Pettit (Janet) and Wendy Vent. Claude will also be missed by his nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Predeceased by his parents Claude and Nylene Pettit, siblings Alexander Pettit (Bernice) and Suzanne McKitterick (Mike), by his brother-in-law Norm Vent and by his niece Mary Jane McKitterick.
Claude spent his youth on the family property in Corunna, Ontario. After a lengthy career at Dow Chemicals, Claude moved with his wife, Anna, and four sons to Guelph, where he enrolled at the University of Guelph. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree, Claude and his family moved to Toronto where he attended Teachers College, accepting his first teaching role at Banting Memorial High School in Alliston. This was followed by a move to Hearst in 1968 where he taught at the Hearst High School. In 1971, Claude and Anna moved their six boys to Anna’s home town of Owen Sound where they opened Sno & Cycle Sports. Upon closing the business more than a decade later, Claude returned to teaching at Georgian College, West Hill High School and through the Province of Ontario’s Futures Program.
Claude and Anna were very active for many years in Owen Sound with the Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA) and awarded the “World’s Greatest Volunteer Award” by the CDA in 1993.
Claude encouraged his six sons to pursue their interests and was always supportive of their endeavours. He was very proud of his family and grandchildren. He loved keeping up with news and current events. He enjoyed music and was always ready for a lively game of euchre. Claude’s laughter and smile said it all.
In keeping with Claude’s wishes, cremation has taken place, and a celebration of Claude’s life will be held at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to Brian E. Wood Funeral Home, Owen Sound, 519-376-7492.
As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations to Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated. Online condolences can be sent to Claude’s family by visiting his memorial at www.woodfuneralhome.ca.
