Clarence Martin Obituary
Clarence B. Martin passed away peacefully at Barnswallow Place, Elmira, Ontario on Saturday, December 30, 2023 in his 87th year.
Beloved husband of Laurene for 63 years and loving father to Mary Ella (Paul) Davidson of Brampton, Norma Saunders of Arthur, Sharon (Matt) Coffey of Arthur and LeRoy (Monique) Martin of Guelph. Remembered lovingly by his grandchildren Adam, Luke and Tamara Davidson; Jaclyn (Richard) Pillar, Rebecca (Tyler) Wilson, Holly Saunders (fiancé Brad Day) and Erica Saunders; Dennis (Amber) Coffey and Justin (fiancé Mikaela Foti) Coffey, Jacob Martin and Evan Martin and 6 great-grandchildren.
Clarence was brother to Almeda (Mrs. Alvin), Aaron (Mary) Martin, Nancy (Edwin) Bowman, Elmer (Mary) Martin, Seleda (Henry) Kraemer, Verna (Leonard) Bauman, Lester Martin, and Ellen Martin, and uncle to many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents Noah W. and Hannah Martin, step-mother Rebecca Martin, sister Velina (Mrs. Sidney), brother-in-law Alvin Martin, and brothers Sidney Martin and Alvin Martin (in infancy).
Brother-in-law to Minerva (Mrs. Urias) Martin, Orlan (Salome) Martin, Ibra (Lena) Martin, Luida (Mahlon) Martin and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by parents-in-law Tobias and Lydia Martin, brothers-in-law Milton, Urias, Nelson and sisters-in-law Vera, Nora and Annie (Mrs. Milton) Martin.
Clarence left school to start working on the family farm at the age of 12, and in 1960 at age 22, married Laurene Martin on her family farm just outside Elmira. He developed his skills as a carpenter and a butcher before their growing family moved to their own farm property near Kenilworth. Soon after, he started working for Rothsay Concentrates (later Maple Leaf Mills) retiring after a 33-year career that started with him working in the plant and vehicle repair shop and for the last 20+ years diving a route primarily between Rothsay and Toronto in his trusty big green and silver rear-loading Mack truck.
Clarence lovingly built the family homestead on their small farming property, with materials purchased one pay cheque at a time over a 2-year period, finally moving their family of 6 into the house, still under construction, in 1975. He had a lifelong love of horses which developed into a keen interest in all aspects of thoroughbred horse racing. Watching the Queen’s Plate and Kentucky Derby races were always annual highlights of the racing year for him.
As the expanded family grew, he relished his role as “Poppa” to 11 grandchildren and always had a ready supply of Werther’s caramel candies in his pocket for surprise visits. He used his old red tractor to make snow piles for winter tobogganing and snow fort building, boiling down maple syrup to make taffy on a bed of fresh snow, making popcorn in his big silver “Poppa’s Bowl”, leading nature walks and skipping stones across the pond on the neighbour’s property and building a fire in one of his trucks old brake drums to roast spider-wieners and make S’mores on warm summer evenings. Each visit would end with a rousing game of “touched-you-last” and Poppa running down the driveway waving goodbye as the cars pulled out onto the road heading for home.
Upon retiring and selling the Kenilworth property, Clarence and Laurene moved into town where he continued his distinguished and decorated safe driving career working for Abates Packers Ltd. in Arthur, ON making deliveries to local area stores and restaurants.
After suffering a debilitating stroke in 2009, he moved into Leisure World (now Barnswallow Place) where he appointed himself the unofficial greeter and door man for guests and staff entering and exiting the facility. For his last 14 years, he was determined to maintain his independence and for most of those years transferred himself in and out of his wheelchair to enjoy weekends spent with his beloved Laurene at Parkview Manors in Floradale.
Clarence maintained his keen memory of people and places right to the very end and always had a funny line or a word of blessing for everyone upon meeting and parting.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 3, 2024 at Floradale Mennonite Church, 22 Florapine Road, Floradale, followed by a reception and fellowship in the church hall. A private family interment will be held in Floradale Mennonite Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family would welcome donations in memory of Clarence to The Heart & Stroke Foundation or the Mennonite Central Committee. Donations may be made through the Dreisinger Funeral Home, Elmira.
