As a mother, daughter, sister, grandmother, friend, and lover of many, Cindy Marie Simpson passed away in Okotoks, Alberta on Wednesday February 28th, 2024 at 61 years of age. She was a real trooper and fighter, battling lung cancer for almost 16 months after initially being diagnosed in October, 2022.
Cindy was determined to enjoy every last moment of life that she could, spending endless amounts of time with family and friends throughout her battle with cancer. She wanted nothing more than to live out her life on her own will, and was ultimately successful in her mission to die in the comfort and peace of her home. Cindy is survived by her two sons, Jeffrey Simpson (Krista) of Okotoks Alberta, and Sean Thome of Medicine Hat Alberta. The boys were her pride and joy and Jeff was able to be by her side for her final breaths. She was overjoyed to be blessed with five granddaughters (Tokada, Alexa, Emma, Ava, and Lillian). One of Cindy’s greatest pleasures was watching her granddaughters grow up and become young ladies around her – they gave her endless joy in her life and she was so proud to be a grandmother.
Cindy was born in Windsor Ontario on January 22nd 1963 to Carol Anne Rutt (Clayton) and Joseph Simpson (Vickie). She was the third child of four for her parents, and their second daughter together. She had a large extended family with each of her parents remarrying later in life. Her siblings include Stephen, Jo-Anne, Mike, Alexandra, and Matthew. With her parents and siblings stretching from one end of Canada to the other, Cindy moved quite often throughout her years, choosing to live close to family in various locations across Ontario, Alberta, and British Columbia throughout her life. Her final move came in the summer of 2022 when she moved from Edmonton to Okotoks to be closer to her granddaughters and her oldest son Jeff. Cindy enjoyed many camping getaways, road trips, and vacations across Alberta and Saskatchewan over her final years – spending plenty of time with family and enjoying her well-deserved retirement.
Cindy was a social butterfly, making friends with all her neighbours wherever she lived across this vast country. She had the opportunity to live in dozens and dozens of different towns and cities throughout her life, sharing the beauty of Canada with her two boys while they were growing up. With such a passion for family, friends, history, and tradition – Cindy was always eager to spend time with others, strike up a conversation, and instilling her “wisdom” about the world to whomever would listen. One of Cindy’s greatest passions was gardening and growing plants in her home, with the boys often referring to her home as “the jungle” due to the sheer volume of plants both indoors and outdoors. Cindy had a green thumb and loved providing advice to neighbours, relatives, and friends on how to treat their ailing grass, plants, flowers, trees, and shrubs. She loved nature and enjoyed seeing animals live within her backyard jungle or out in the wild. Cindy had numerous pets over the years including countless cats and dogs that kept her company once her boys left home.
Although she passed away too soon, Cindy was proud to be the longest living female in her family for many generations. The last couple years of her life in Okotoks were filled with happiness, love, and a very high quality of life. She was thrilled to live so close to her granddaughters and finally have a place she could call her own. Cindy loved her little apartment in Okotoks, frequently sitting outside on her deck to talk with neighbours, or wave to Jeff, Krista, and their family as they drove by on the way to/from school, cheer lessons, horseback riding lessons, work, or whatever activity their busy family was partaking in that day. It is fitting that Cindy passed away in her favourite blue camping chair on the deck, where she sat for endless hours over the years enjoying a breath of “fresh air” and watching over the neighborhood from her perch.
Granny – We know you’re looking down on us all from Heaven now. We hope you know how grateful we all are for the time you shared with us. You’ll be missed, but please know that you will forever be in our hearts and minds. We love you so much Granny Simpson, rest in peace. (Alexa, Emma, Ava, and Lily)
Mom – You’ve been such an amazing mother and mentor to both Sean and myself over the years. You’ve been my shoulder to cry on when I needed it, the one to pick me up when I was down, and the one to point me in the right direction when I couldn’t see the path forward myself. Thank you so much for being here when I needed you, and I’m so glad I could be there when you needed it as well. I will love and cherish you forever. (Jeff)
