Christine Rose Bergeson (née Blanchard), affectionately known as Chris, passed away on February 5, 2024, in Surrey, BC. Born on January 18, 1954, in Kimberley, BC, Chris lived a life of resilience, love, and a remarkable ability to rise above challenges.
Chris’s professional journey was diverse and impactful. She had an early career as a computer programmer at IBM, later serving as a Physio Aide in the burn unit at Foothills Hospital in Calgary, AB. Her life took a dramatic turn when she was struck by a drunk driver, resulting in a traumatic brain injury. Persevering, Chris moved to Vancouver, where she embraced various roles, including retail manager, cook, and butcher. Her recovery journey led her to Sechelt, BC, where she found her calling as a Long-Term Care Aide at Totem Lodge, deeply cherishing the time spent caring for others. Despite facing the early onset of Frontotemporal Dementia resulting from her brain injury, Chris continued to fight for her independence for as long as possible.
Chris’s legacy is carried on by her loving daughters, Kelly and Carmin, and her cherished grandchildren, Connor, Westley, Alexander, and Chloe. She is also survived by her supportive sons-in-law, David and Ruairi, her siblings, Bryne, Doug, Brenda, and Steven, and her extended family, located mainly in the Kootenays.
Beyond her professional achievements, Chris was known for her big heart, especially her boundless love for her mother, daughters, and even the Sunshine Coast. She gave back by volunteering with children, seniors, and marginalized communities. An accomplished trained baker, she was celebrated for her award-winning breads and cakes, particularly her renowned Black Forest Cake. Her return to school to become a Long-Term Care Aide saw her graduating at the top of her class, a testament to her enduring work ethic.
Chris’s life was enriched by her dogs, Harry and Zena, and her happiest moments were spent with family, being creative, and enjoying nature through fishing, camping, beach walks, and gardening.
In place of service, the family encourages those wishing to pay respects to find a moment of peace in nature. Donations in Chris’s memory can be made to the SPCA. For those inclined to send flowers, please direct them to Clayton Heights Care Community, Clydesdale Neighbourhood, at 18788 71 Ave, Surrey, BC V4N 6L9, where Chris received exceptional care.
Her life was a journey of love, laughter, and an unwavering spirit. She will be deeply missed and mattered in this world.
