Peacefully at the Isabel and Arthur Meighen Manor, our dear Chris passed away September 10, 2023 in her 99th year following a long illness. Beloved daughter of the late Arthur Faulkner Gay and Flora MacDougall Gay and cherished sister to the late Arthur MacDougall Gay and the late Mary Josephine Rader, she will be dearly missed by her extended family and her many friends.
Chris was born on February 5, 1925, the youngest of three children. A lifelong resident of Toronto, Chris lived a full and eventful life that touched and inspired so many of us. Her love of learning, of sport, of travel, her love for music and the arts and her faith as a Christian had a profound impact on her life as she drew upon her many gifts and talents to serve those around her and enrich their lives.
Beginning her career as a dental assistant, she later graduated teacher’s college and went on to teach at General Mercer P.S. and Bowmore Rd. P.S. in Toronto. Early in her teaching career, her principal announced that she was to become the school librarian. Chris embraced this role and went on to pursue further education, earning a B.A. from the University of Toronto and a Master of Science in Library Science from the University of Southern California. Throughout her career as a teacher and librarian, Chris was to inspire many students and instil in them a love of reading and writing.
Chris was a member of St. Clair Avenue Baptist Church and later, Yorkminster Park Baptist Church. As a trained and accomplished contralto soloist and a member of the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, Chris used her musical gift in service as a soloist within the Baptist church community. At Yorkminster, she was very involved, serving on both the Women’s Executive and the Board of Music.
And, of course, there is Chris’s lifelong connection to Ward’s Island. The Gay family, as one of the original families to hold a lease, summered on Ward’s Island beginning in the 1890’s. Chris’s parents met on Ward’s Island while working as leaders at the YMCA Boys and Girls camps and Chris spent every summer there, first at the family tent and later, the family cottage. Chris was an avid and accomplished tennis player and enjoyed playing the game on the island for many years. She was a much loved and respected member of the Ward’s Island community.
As we say good bye to our cousin and our dear friend, we remember a woman of immense grace who embraced all that life has to offer and in turn, offered so much of herself in service to others. As Chris cared for her brother and her sister in their later years, it has been an honour for her cousins to have the privilege of being involved in Chris’s care late in her life. Much gratitude is due to Carol Edwards, Rovelyn Batarra, Michelle Ramos, and others at Staff Relief and at the Meighen Manor who were so dedicated to her care and made her last years joyful and comfortable.
Friends may call at Morley Bedford Funeral Home, 159 Eglinton Avenue West, Toronto on Thursday, September 21st at 10 a.m. Following this visitation, a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. in the chapel at Morley Bedford with a reception afterward. A private interment will take place at Prospect Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Ward’s Island Clubhouse on Sunday, October 29th. Details to be announced.
‘For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus or Lord’ Romans 8:38-39
