It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of dear Peter on June 11, 2024. After a courageous eight-year battle with multiple myeloma, the gates of heaven opened up to receive him on that day.
Born in Konstantinsbad, Germany, he resided in Bavaria for two years, then relocated to Alsace for four years before immigrating to Canada in 1951 with his parents Eugene and Catherine, and his sister Susan.
In 1970, he graduated from UNB after studying science. He majored in microbiology, which led him to a long and successful career in the diagnostic industry.
Peter was a kind, caring, loving, dedicated and selfless family man, as well as a devout Catholic. In 1999, Peter was awarded the Canadian medal of bravery for a heroic act in California, where he saved two women from drowning while attending a hockey tournament. An avid goaltender, his passion for hockey began at a young age. He played in many leagues over the years, often posing as Ken Dryden while in in the net. Peter played right up to the old timer’s league, earning the nickname “Peter Puck”.
Peter was passionate about oldies music and enjoyed eating good (sea)food, especially from the Maritimes. He loved picnic outings, sitting by the waterfront and watching the sailboats go by. He enjoyed the many peaceful moments life offered him.
He will be fondly remembered for his courageous optimism, and his desire to connect with everyone through his humour and goodwill.
Peter is survived by his beloved wife Valerey, his children Katherine (Liam), Christina (Dave), Sean, Laura (Kevin), his granddaughters Beatrice and Lily, his loving sister Susan and his cousins in Hungary.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the MUHC myeloma research team of Dr. Sebag, as well as Dr. Pamidi, Dr. Vinh, Dr. Deschenes, and Dr. Makhoul. A special thank you also to Dr. Benjamin Gordon and Dr. Renee Schiff for their outstanding care throughout Peter’s medical journey.
In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated towards Nova West Island, the West Island Cancer Wellness Center, and the Cedars Cancer Center.
There will be a 30-minute hockey tribute (shoot out) during the Friday night summer league at the Dollard Civic Centre, date to be determined. The funeral ceremony will take place on Saturday July 13 at St. Luke’s parish in Dollard-des-Ormeaux. Mass will begin at 11:00 a.m., with a reception afterwards from 12:00-2:00 p.m. The ceremony will also be live-streamed, with the YouTube link made available through St. Luke’s website shortly beforehand.
