Chester Stone
April 6, 1939 – February 17, 2024
The family of Chester Stone are heartbroken to announce his sudden passing on February 17, 2024 at his home in Monroe, aged 84 years.
Predeceased by his parents Chesley and Gladys (Stanford) Stone, his sister Melvina (Stone) McLing and his brother Roy Stone.
Chester leaves to mourn his heartbroken wife of 48 years Helen and his son, and best friend, Wayne. Also leaving to mourn are his sister Nita in
Jackson, Tennessee U.S.A and her family and Marie (Kenneth Warren) of Chapel Arm and her family, special cousin Suzanne Stanford (Eric Suley) of St. John’s whom he thought of as another sister, and a wide circle of nieces and nephews and cousins throughout Newfoundland and Labrador and in the United States.
Chester had a deep love for his home community of Monroe and his family’s deep and rich shipbuilding history there. He was able to fulfill his wish and retire there, spending 29 years in his “little place overlooking the sea” which he dearly loved. Chester’s entire working career was devoted to public service throughout the province, working with the Departments of Social Services, Education and finally Justice.
Chester took great delights in the little things in life, enjoying travelling the waters of Smith Sound in his boat, doing a crossword puzzle or reading his favourite books, quite often something about Sir Winston Churchill or other history-related material. He also had a deep love and compassion for all animals, especially his “little buddy” next door, Caspurr the cat, who would visit daily. His face would light up with joy when he would see Caspurr coming over for a visit.
In keeping with Chester’s wishes, cremation has taken place, and no service will be held. In lieu of flowers the family would kindly ask that anyone wishing to make a donation please do so to your local animal shelter, such as the S.P.C.A (even a gift of food for the animals would be appreciated) or the Children’s Wish Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador.
“We Shall Meet Again One Day to Part no More.”
