Charlton Beverly Levy
1929-2024
It is with much
sadness, love and gratitude for a life well lived that we announce the
passing of our father, Charlton Beverly Levy on November 27th, 2024 at
the age of 95. Dad was born in Black River, Kings County on October
2nd, 1929 and was the son of the late Stanley and Elsie (Eisenhauer)
Levy.
He was the loving
husband for 67 years to the late Marie (Anderson) Levy and the proud,
caring father of Merrill (Louise Carter), Canaan; Michael, B.C.;
Michelle (Mark Johnson), Hantsport; Margo (Michael DeLisle), Ont.;
Marylee, Kentville; Mark (Mandi Gandelman), Utah; and LaMont
«Monty», Wolfville.
He was also the
grandfather of 17 grandchildren: Kevin Levy, Jackie Hutt, Corrine
Brown, Mallory Selby, Kirk Levy, Lauren Levy, Justin Johnson, Nathan
Johnson, Molly Johnson, Jade DeLisle, Andrew Merks, Evan Merks,
Melissa Merks-Odgers, Zeke Levy, Sarah Levy, Lauchlin Levy, and Landen
Levy and 13 great-grandchildren, and uncle to many nieces and
nephews.
Dad was the youngest
and last surviving member of his family. Besides his parents, he was
predeceased by his sisters, Merle Schofield (Hedley) and Ida Mae Smith
(Kenneth), and brothers, Lloyd (Ruby), Ivan (Leona), Arnel (Helen),
and Orin (Greta).
He is survived by
daughter-in-law, Sheila Jones-Levy and son-in-law, David Merks and
sisters-in-law, Hope (Gerald) Atkinson and Dorothy
Parsons.
Dad graduated from
Wolfville High School in 1948, from the Provincial Normal College in
Truro in 1949, and from Acadia University in 1956 with his Bachelor of
Science and Bachelor of Education degrees. His teaching
career spanned 35 years, teaching in Grand Pre, Avonport, Horton
District, Wolfville and Gaspereau. He was very popular,
well-liked by staff and students, and often referred to as «a
favourite teacher».
Dad was an ardent
sportsman, having played hockey with the Provincial Normal College,
the Acadia Axemen, and the Wolfville Falcons. He gave a lot
of effort and time in support of minor hockey in Wolfville and served
as president of both the Wolfville Minor Hockey and the Valley Minor
Hockey Associations. Dad was also a member of the St. George
Masonic Lodge and the Wolfville Curling Club, where he coached both
Wolfville School boys and girls teams for 15 years even after moving
to Melanson with his family in 1975.
Dad was a member of
the Baptist Church of Black River, Wolfville, and Wallbrook/Gaspereau.
He was active in church work, serving as Sunday School Superintendent
and also on the board of deacons.
Dad’s love of animals,
trees, and plants was evident in the pets he had over the years, often
nurturing injured animals back to health. Dad would plant beautiful
thriving flower and vegetable gardens each year. Bird feeders were
hung from tree branches and seed spread each morning for his pheasants
and crows. His many exploratory walks through the woods,
often with his kids in tow were always fun and educational.
Dad was certainly an environmentalist, and way ahead of his time in
doing all he could do to protect and preserve his
surroundings.
Dad had many interests
that brought him joy and fulfillment: taxidermy, woodworking,
furniture making & finishing, singing and playing the guitar,
and taking on anyone who dared, to a competitive game of
crokinole.
Dad’s musical talents
were discovered at the very young age, when he taught himself to yodel
just like Montana Slim (Wilf Carter). He was a member of the Levy
Brother’s Quartet, who were widely known in many communities for their
church and concert entertainment. He sang with the Wallbrook Church
Choir and Men’s Choir. He sang solos, duets with
his wife, and was the lead singer/guitar player in «Melanson Slim
and the Valley Ramblers» country band. Dad was
definitely a popular entertainer performing at many variety shows,
nursing homes, concerts, hymn sings, and
funerals.
Our father’s eagerness
to explore the world, provided him with opportunities to travel later
in life. A trip to Igloolik, NWT in the Arctic in 1989, a
road trip across the US in 2002, and a trip to Europe in 2008 to visit
the war countries, were all life highlights which he spoke of often
and treasured greatly. Dad also enjoyed VIA train trips to
Ontario, especially sitting in the dome car with a book or two,
admiring the massive landscape and always striking up a conversation
with those around him.
Dad always thought of
others before himself, and was so willing to provide a caring, giving
hand to those less fortunate. Many individuals can certainly
attest to his generous nature.
The family wishes to
express their sincere appreciation to Annapolis Valley Home Care,
particularly Amy and Jada; to Carrie Dauphinee and staff at R.E.A.L.
Residence in Windsor; and to Grand View Manor in Berwick, for
providing Dad with affection and «home away from home» care
during these past two years.
In Dad’s own words,
«He was a strong believer in God and his great creator, and in
Jesus his son as his savior and
guide.»
Dad was dearly loved
and will be profoundly missed.
In accordance with
Dad’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be
held on Tuesday, December 10th from 7:00 to 9:00
p.m. at the Gaspereau Baptist Church. The funeral service
will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 11th, at the
church, followed by a reception at the White Rock Community
Centre. Pastor Ben Davidson and Reverend Gary Manthorne

be available online on Thursday, December 12. A private family burial
will take place at Gaspereau Cemetery immediately following the
funeral.
